This would come one year after the NFL moved touchbacks up from the 25-yard-line to the 30. The league reported a 57 percent increase in returns in 2024; which was the main goal of the drastic change to the kickoff rules last year. Another five yards could incentivize more potential kick returns in 2025, as well.

I miss the old time football where the wedge was allowed, and then banned, on kickoffs..

They should put it at the 40 just like an out of bounds kickoff. With the box that’s what it is anyway. The new kickoff rules were good, way more run backs, longer run backs, more TDs off run backs. The kickoff had replaced the extra point as the most boring play in north American sports, that’s always a problem.

“Re flag football. They really did push that this year”

This is the second year theyvdid it for the pro bowl.

I think its a trial balloon to see if fans will accept it......and many will since they live their lives vicariously through a favorite player or team....(never understood that BTW)

It would solve a myriad of injury problems but it would be boring as hell.

The should move the kickoff yard line further back, forcing receiving team to run the ball = fewer touchback.

If it’s kicked through the end zone and cannot be returned, receiving team gets it on the 10-yard-line.

Then that only encourages kickers to blast it beyond the endzone, because no kicking team is going to turn down having the opponent's offense default to the 10-yard line.

Not the best thing to do if you want to encourage more kickoff returns (which the NFL is trying to do while simultaneously trying to minimize injuries).

"Place the ball at the 20-yard line. Eliminate kickoffs."

Or this! It will speed up play. maybe no more 3 1/2 hour games (and non-stop commercial breaks)...

Make it a 5 yard penalty on the kicking team if the first bounce of the kick is past the receiving team’s 25 yard line.

If the receiving team then lets it roll through the end zone, it’s a 5 yard penalty on the receiving team.

Tweak the rules around this basic idea.

>> I can’t wait until the league goes to flag football format and is 100% pay per view....it’s gonna be awesome.

Not a big SportBall fan, eh? LOL. Me neither. Used to be, and about a decade ago I just lost interest. Have better things to do than to follow SportBall.

Since pretty much 50-yard Field Goals are pretty much the norm now, I say make the PATs from 50 yards. Make it so that there’s a 50/50 chance of making a PAT. Of course that would encourage more 2-point conversions, so move 2-pt conversions to the 5-yard line. And then have an option for a conversion from the 10-yard line, that if converted, gives you 3 points AND the ball, without needing to onside kick.

I’ll settle for fewer breaks (commercials -> kickoff -> commercials -> quick 3 and out -> commercials -> punt/return -> commercials....)

I think we should go back to uncovered stadiums and encourage QBs to smoke on the sidelines.

Or does that make me seem old?

this new kickoff scheme is a joke. College football looks like the real football to me.

The NFL continues to f up the game. Maybe they should work on the corrupt officiating.

I don’t think they wanted more 2 pointers, they just wanted to get the extra point not automatic. We went from 2 or 3 missed in the entire season to 2 or 3 missed every week, that’s good enough, maaaaybe nudging it back an extra 5 yards would be good. But the changes worked.

And I think the kickoff changes are working. Other than I didn’t get why the end zone wasn’t as “out of bounds” as short or wide. Not in the box is not in the box. I was kind of surprised how few teams rugbied it. They built the rules specifically to try to get returners to pitch back. We’ll see what happens with another season of it.

I would make a “Doink” worth 5 points, a “Double-Doink” would be 10 points.

Actually a “Doink” that still goes through the uprights should be an additional 2 points, so that would make it a 5-point FG, if the “Doink” is no good, then it’s 2-points.

I’ve often thought they should put a top cross bar on it. No more “infinity goal posts”. In the box to make it count. Force the kicks lower and get more blocked kicks.

If the ball is kicked into the end zone without touching the field of play then the ball goes on the 35. If the ball is allowed to bounce out then it goes to the 5.

Enough incentive to kick it into play and receive it in play.

No fair catches. Defend your receiver.
