SAS soldiers threaten strike action if deployed to Ukraine

SAS soldiers are threatening to go ‘on strike’ if they are deployed to Ukraine unless they receive assurances they will not face future prosecution for using lethal force.

The rebellion follows a coroner’s court ruling that the Special Forces were not justified in using lethal force against four IRA members in a 1992 ambush, and on the back of an ongoing public inquiry into allied extrajudicial killings in Afghanistan.

Four Provisional IRA members were shot dead by British soldiers minutes after they had carried out a gun attack on Coalisland RUC station in February 1992, and on Thursday at Belfast Royal Courts of Justice, a coroner – who had previously ruled the soldiers did not have an honest belief in the necessity of using lethal force – referred the case to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Last night, senior defence sources said the SAS was facing the worst crisis in its history and called for the troops to be given the same legal protection against prosecution afforded to MI6 agents.

A defence source said: ‘We need a change in the law to give our Special Forces the full protection of the Crown – otherwise within a decade we will not have the SAS. Why should they go on to the frontline against Putin if this is hanging over them?

‘Morale is through the floor, blokes are leaving and the regiment is suffering. They are being forced to increase recruiting from the wider Army.

Why should they risk their lives against Russia at all?!

The war was provoked by NATO.

ALL NATO countries must agree to allow a new member in..and at least for the next four years (hopefully a lot longer) that ain’t gonna happen.

Soldiers afraid to go into combat against lethal enemy combatants because they are afraid they will be sued by their own officials? Welcome to the collapse of the British Empire. What a joke.

If I lived in Europe I’d be more concerned about Russia than I am sitting in my hovel here in the western hemisphere. Russia will always have designs on its neighbors. It’s just how they are.

This is a wonderful laugh-and-a-half.

Western liberals, Lefties and outright Communists have been playing the “prosecution” game for a very long time. Remember My Lai? It was indeed horrid, but the larger frame for this was McNamara's brilliant domino theory that got millions of Vietnamese and more than 38 thousand Americans killed in nineteen years. The reality at the end of the war? Communist Vietnam was unified. Was the war worth it then?

Without dredging up too much of the past, one observes that military who have well learned the postwar “prosecution lesson” are among those who will not expose themselves to an enemy in battle only to find themselves later exposed to another enemy at home.

What a surprise.... < s a r c >

“Russia will always have designs on its neighbors.”

Particularly when their neighbors start to get cute.

Come to think of it, Trump would likely (or at least hopefully) respond as Russia if Mexico started getting cute in the same way as Ukraine.

When negotiation distills down to one item, who will give?

It appears the soldiers don’t have much to lose.

“Mexico already has designs on us.”

Maybe...but wake me up when they invite China or Russia in to set up bases.

I don’t think immunity from war crimes can be guaranteed to anybody.

They all know lefties at the top have no moral foundation

Once politics changes, they will indeed become political targets

The SAS is nobody’s fool—nobody sane wants to go to the Eastern front.

In a quagmire war troops often “lose it” from the stress.

If their national government does not have their back they are toast.

“…unless they receive assurances they will not face future prosecution for using lethal force.“

I’m pretty sure some FReeper or other predicted this years ago. Can’t remember the details.

Last night, shadow defence secretary James Cartlidge said: ‘These reports of discontent among our serving military, fearing being hounded on their return home from action more than any enemy they may face, should be a wake-up call to Labour.’

The Ministry of Defence said it was ‘pure speculation’ to say who would form part of any UK peacekeeping in Ukraine, adding: ‘We are still at the early stages of the process.’

shadow defense secretary vs ministry of defense?

You’re so funny

Trump is looking at bombing Mexican cartels, against Mexican government wishes, because an armed narco state on our border has killed tens of thousands of our citizens and is a national security threat

When Russia does it - it’s merely because they are evil

--- "If I lived in Europe I'd be more concerned about Russia than I am sitting in my hovel here in the western hemisphere."

My bride and I were legal residents in Germany for decades, before retirement and returning to this lovely sea island along the Southeast coast. No hovel.

During my time working all across Europe (and elsewhere) I personally came across no Europeans who expressed your concern. Not in Germany, after the Mauerfall. Not in the Netherlands, some of whom expressed their remembered "concerns" of the Germans, certainly not in Sweden whose "concerns" today have more to do with the government-sponsored Hijrah ongoing, and not n France and Belgium where I worked on many occasions.

I even worked with a Russian legal resident of Germany, there and in visits to Israel, wherein he joked more about the KGB and relished being a legal, long-term German resident.

So much depends on one's experiences. The officially non-NATO war between non-NATO Ukraine and non-NATO Russia sparks lots of heat on these threads, but when this is over -- all wars end -- then the historians will come to sort it all out. however it ends.

My bride and I trust President Trump and his adminstration in dealing with all this. Surprises and all.
