Placebo frontman Brian Molko was charged Monday with calling right-wing Premier Giorgia Meloni a fascist and a Nazi at a concert in Turin in July 2023.
The justice ministry gave Turin prosecutors the green light to charge Molko, a 52-year-old American-Scottish musician, with insulting Italian institutions on July 11 at Stupinigi.
The alternative rock band’s singer will be liable to pay a fine if the charges stick.

A right wing premier?
Where on Earth?
No freedom of speech in Italy?
These authoritarians are out of control.
Have you seen Italy’s budget?
The EU owns it.
Well, the EU and the ChiComs.
Hoisted on your own petard.
Is this their response to VP Vance’s speech?
Apparently, but they also have defamation and libel laws that could land you in jail. When you are a guest in another country, publicly calling their Prime Minister a fascist and a nazi is not smart, especially when they are clearly neither.
Donald Trump is clearly neither, but nobody’s being fined for calling him those epithets.
What we fought for in WWII has clearly been undone. Laws like that are the basis for totalitarianism.
Melani needs to get ahead of this and order the charges dropped.
“Unlike my friends in other EU nations Italy supports free speech.”
She pretends to be for free speech. If she did, that would be a stab in the gut of the EU.
But then again the EU seems to want another world war on their soil.
(This is not particularly directed at you.)
This is none of our business.
The same would be true for Italians criticizing an internal US matter, say, a US flag desecration law or Constitutional Amendment.*
It’s not their business!
*Needed, IMO, as “Protection of an Institution”.
There is, however, another annoying aspect to this, often seen on FR, but even more widely used on the Left:
Nobody involved in this internal Italian affair is a “Nazi”... The word is thrown around to the point of being almost meaningless — a terrible injustice to the millions who died at the hands of the Nazis. Nazism incorporated repression of expression and dissent, but so do most political systems. In fact, virtually ALL in practice limit speech to some degree, the question is where to draw the line, and how harshly to punish.
That is, however, not the point.
Nazism incorporates many other elements, many ugly, a few positive if not carried too far, including strong national pride. MAGA incorporates strong national pride too - that hardly makes genuine* MAGA people “Nazis”. Calling them so surely discredits the name caller, though!
*OT: We do have some here who claim to be MAGA but don’t seem to think America was great even at its height, winning WW2 and the Cold War. Don’t ask me what they are, besides liars and disgusting. They certainly are not MAGA.
Even barring AfD in Germany would not have been “Nazi”. A core belief of the most vocal of those who would bar AfD is almost unlimited acceptance of Muslim immigrants: a thoroughly non-Nazi position.
Don’t see the correlation. Imagine being fined for criticizing Biden?
