Once upon a time Americans lived with the delusion that the transplant process was governed strictly on pure medical need basis without favoritism in any way. Doctors, we were all told, are apolitical and not interested in celebrity, all lives were equal and they treated the cases that were the most urgent and with the best prognosis to survive long.

Then Governor Bob Casey of PA got a heart and a liver. Then Mickey Mantle also got a heart and a liver. Casey lived a while and Mantle died pretty soon after. The public took notice and the medical establishment admitted they were given favored treatment for publicity reasons to raise public awareness, apparently willing to sacrifice the people that died because Mantle got rental organs instead of them.

But the toothpaste was out of the tube for those who paid attention, Doctors will decide if you live or die based on what they think of you and how they benefit, not your need.

I am related to someone who saw a doc that refused a surgery with risk because the doc wouldn’t risk his own reputation.
