Indiana House Speaker Todd Huston has announced a legislative proposal to incorporate 33 Illinois counties that have expressed a desire to secede from their state.
This initiative comes after these counties, frustrated with the political dominance of Chicago and Cook County, voted in favor of exploring separation.

In response to these developments, Indiana House Speaker Todd Huston introduced House Bill 1008 in January 2025.
This bill proposes the creation of an “Indiana-Illinois Boundary Adjustment Commission” to consider incorporating the secessionist Illinois counties into Indiana.
The movement began in 2020, with several counties holding referendums each election cycle. In the November 2024 elections, seven additional counties—Calhoun, Clinton, Greene, Iroquois, Jersey, Madison, and Perry—voted in favor of exploring separation from Illinois.
Indiana wants me.
That’s electoral votes and congressional seats. And money.
And the red counties in CA, OR and WA are watching.
My late father was born in Marion County. Wonder what he would think of this?
I say make it a trade and give them Gary!
Could this plan to secede from Illinois has been caused by the fat blob Governor and the crooked Cook County machine?
isolate the cities ...
These people are the mercy of the a-holes in Chicago but no way Illinois let’s them go.
That’s correct.
Preferably the ones run by demonrats.
Hope it sets a precedent for Western Maryland
We been trying to get free for decades.
WV wants us.
It’s been brewing for longer than that. The big fat governor just broke the camels back. 😂
Sorry, this FReeper doesn’t support changing state borders for any reason, and if they do get changed, it’s just as likely we’d get burned by changes in the future, given our idiocy elsewhere (like 500,000 Trump voters sitting out the 2020 Georgia Senate runoffs so that Biden could have a majority in the US Senate).
that’s just about all of them ...
The money part will be most difficult. Many of those who would merge with Indiana are vested into IL state pensions. And the state pension is massively in the red already. And of course, the current government employees in these counties may not continue paying into the pension plan. The schools and county and city jobs will flip to IN. Only some state workers *may* continue working for the state of IL but hard to see how as any state offices in those regions won’t be necessary. Maybe IN can use them, or maybe IN has its own different way of doing things.
Weird.
Cook county, been crook county for a long time. Capone days and before I believe. Yeah, it’s not right.
If you succeed, your income tax will go down by about 3%.
Are you opposed for political fears? California is way too big and should break up. There are several proposals from splitting into 3 by north, central and south while other people want to break away from the SF to LA coastal corridor. People in rural and eastern areas of the western states are basically outvoted all the time, and many want to secede or join with another state. In CA these areas have enough population to qualify for statehood. In WA and OR I’m not sure of the population but they want to merge east, while in CA they mostly want to make a new state or states rather than merge with another.
We'll punish those Biden cheaters! We'll stay home and let Georgia send a pencil-neck geek and a crazed black preacher to Washington!
