The TRUMP Act: The Worst Named Legislation Ever?

Governor DeSantis is not happy about some shenanigans going on in the Florida legislature.

Political backlash and public outcry have prompted a compromise between Florida governor Ron DeSantis and the state’s Republican legislators on Florida’s immigration policy, following a prolonged dispute over how to handle illegal aliens. On Monday, newly proposed legislation reintroduces key measures that align more closely with DeSantis’s and President Trump’s immigration strategy.

To advance the bills, DeSantis called for another special session of the Florida Legislature to “enact policies that will help end the illegal immigration crisis once and for all.” He emphasized that he and legislators have collaborated closely to incorporate the best elements from the “various proposals,” aiming to create legislation that would provide the resources to local officials, hold illegal aliens accountable, and partner with the federal government to enforce immigration laws.

The controversy started in late January, when DeSantis convened a special legislative session to advance his strategy for immigration reform. However, the Florida Legislature foiled the governor’s plans, rejecting his more robust immigration provisions. The establishment Republican leaders turned around and introduced a weaker bill, calling it the “Tackling and Reforming Unlawful Migration Policy,” or the TRUMP Act, a misnomer in populist Republican circles.

Shortly after their shenanigans, DeSantis registered his dissent in a January 27 post on X, calling out Florida legislators for their unserious bill on immigration. He accused them of “gutt[ing]” his proposal of its strongest “interior enforcement provisions.” DeSantis bluntly accused the lawmakers of voting for a bill that was nothing more than “antics,” “theatrics,” and “window dressing.” He then promised to veto the bill.

Specifically, DeSantis’ social media post expressed frustration with a provision in the bill that would strip the governor of immigration enforcement power and place it in the hands of the commissioner of

The clash is between DeSantis not wanting to be hobbled in his future plans by a bad record on immigration enforcement, and Florida’s GOP legislators wanting to protect the agriculture and tourism interests that are reliant on cheap illegal labor.

Why are almost all politicians the same?

You mean, why aren't they all paragons of virtue, thoughtful careful thinkers, sensitive to their constituents, willing to sacrifice themselves for the sake of their country, faithful to the US Constitution for which they pledged their sacred honor?

Well, I expect a few were at first were, and then became seduced by power and the ever-present temptations of self, the world and the enemy. Some had very few of these virtues and slipped through the system simply because they got in unopposed or worse yet, had a similar opponent.

Between these extremes are the leaders we want for this nation. Those who stay true to their principals and do not lie to the public decade after decade.

I see such a one as in Trump. He stood on his principals and honesty of who he was and blew away the opposition for years. Not only to a corrupt press, and a faithless to their country Democrats, but even those he gave the chance in his own party during his first term.

And found out, the hard way what politics can do the worst to a man and his family. Yet survived it and beat the odds yet again.

Will we see the likes of him again? I hope so, as I am seeing hopes in his latest of those confirmed who withstood some of the vilest onslaughts I have ever witnessed.

Will the "Good old boy" network rise again? Will the gotcha anti-americans rise again? I doubt we have seen the last of either.

My only faith is in the system which so aptly exposes the worst of them; The Constitution of the United States of America for which they supposedly vowed their sacred honor.

Yep wanted to hand immigration enforcement to the Dept of Ag. What a completely stupid move that was an obvious attempt to prevent anything serious being done in FLA

They need to prosecute those businesses since hiring illegals has been a crime for decades

The crime has an element of scienter attached, so lack of knowledge of the illegal being illegal is a defense. That is why an everify requirement is essential.
