Looking for a different experience for a vacation
Well the border snakes its way through the islands. You might drift into the 51st by chance. Boldt Castle is worth a look.
The guided river cruises are very worthwhile. I, too enjoyed Boldt Castle. Avoid Alexandria Bay-tourist trap. Clayton is a nice town with lots to do.
Thanks. Going to check out Clayton.
Canadia (Kamala speak) being the 51’st state would be even better.
You only need worry about the border if you dock on Canadian soil, or the US soil if originating in Canada.
If you like boats, especially old ones, be sure to check out Clayton boat museum.
Great area. Boldt Castle is well worth the visit. Especially cool are the restored vintage, wooden racing boats.
Alexandria Bay is very “touristy” but kind of fun. Couple good bars for sunset drinks.
There is excellent fishing nearby in Black Lake. Northern, walleye, large and small mouth bass. Crappie by the bucket load at the right time.
Also, very close to the north western edge of the Adirondack Park. If you’ve never been to the high peaks region of the ADK, do yourself a favor and check it out.
I’ve been through Adirondack Park many times. Just beautiful, as is most of N.Y. State. This is sounding better the more I read about it, and I love to fish. Spent many summers in Verendrye Provincial Park in Quebec. Caught a 17 3/4 lb Northen pike, that was my best catch along with many walleye and other pike. Boldt Castle sounds interesting, and the towns also. Any good restaurants along the shores accessed by boat?
There’s dock side eating and drinking in Alex Bay that i recall. Not so much as you head downstream toward north east. Mostly private cottages. I recall recommendations to head upstream for Clayton and Cape Vincent. I think that puts you into Lake Ontario.
It’s been years since we visited the 1000 Islands. I’ve always wanted to rent a boat-only access island/cottage and let my dog run totally free for the week. The sound of the water there gets into your bones. Enjoy and safe traveling FRiend...
Should have added;
If you like salmon fishing, check out Polaski, NY. South on I81 from Alex Bay. When the run happens, that seems to be the most renowned spot. I have old friends from CT who make the trip every year. I think they’re working on 40+ straight years. Lot of folks from WNY make the trip and rave about fishing the eastern end of lake Ontario and feeders...FWIW
Love older wooden speedboats. Very classy. My father had a 16ft. Yellowjacket.
I also have friends who fish for salmon around the Pulaski area. I almost went one year, had all my gear ready, but landed a nice contract and couldn’t pass up the dough. You wouldn’t necessarily think of N.J. when planning a salmon fishing trip, but Merrill Creek reservoir was stocked several years ago and now is a great lake for several species, bass, lakers, pickeral, and now salmon.
