German chancellor slams Trump’s Ukraine rare earths demand

German chancellor Olaf Scholz criticises U.S. President’s demand for Ukrainian rare earths in exchange for U.S. aid, emphasising selflessness in helping Ukraine.

German chancellor Olaf Scholz slammed as “selfish and self-serving” Donald Trump’s demands for Ukrainian rare earths in exchange for U.S. military aid, in an interview published on Saturday (February 8, 2025).

“Ukraine is under attack and we are helping it, without asking to be paid in return. This should be everyone’s position,” Mr. Scholz told the RND media group, when asked about Mr. Trump’s demands for a possible quid pro quo for U.S. aid.

The German chancellor had already described Mr. Trump’s demands as “very selfish” on Monday (February 3, 2025) after a European Union summit in Brussels.

He had said Ukraine’s resources should be used to finance everything needed after the war, such as reconstruction and maintaining a strong army.

“It would be very selfish, very self-serving” to demand something from Ukraine in exchange for aid, he said.

Mr. Trump had said he wanted “equalisation” from Ukraine for Washington financial support, adding, “We’re telling Ukraine they have very valuable rare earths. We’re looking to do a deal with Ukraine where they’re going to secure what we’re giving them with their rare earths and other things”.

He added, “I want to have security of rare earth. We’re putting in hundreds of billions of dollars. They have great rare earth. And I want security of the rare earth, and they’re willing to do it.”

Guess it didn’t occur to him that Trump is creating a rationale to preserve Ukraine.

Looks like he hates Trump more than he loves the Ukrainians.

Nothing will happen until Gabbard is in place. DNI is over the NRO. Satellites will be relied upon, not biased sources.

And one more time, Gazprom was all over Ukraine for what, 30 years? All these profoundly valuable minerals that suddenly appear, in text, never got mined by the people who poked the most holes in the ground and know more about that geology than anyone else.

Given that reality, odds seem really high that there is nothing there and they are trying to buy from Trump with that nothing.

Thru 2023 Germany had provided $6.6B Euros of aid mostly in the form of surplus military weapons.

We have provided $75B or so according to Ukraine and somehow squandered another $100B somewhere (we are even sure). Those are rough numbers. We are apparently so generous with taxpayer monies that we don’t even keep track of what all we give away.

... and Germany wants to lecture us about helping Ukraine!

Olaf should shut up !
He’s reminding President Trump that the Germans owe America for their lives. I don’t remember any reimbursement for the cost of World War II .
