Money saved by shutting Education Dept. must go to school choice — for sake of kids
NY Post ^ | 2/07/25 | Corey DeAngelis

Some House Democrats were not happy about being blocked from entering the Department of Education on Friday.

They’ve gotten word that President Trump is expected to issue an executive order to abolish the department, and they’re in panic mode.

The department was created in 1979 as a political payoff by Democrat President Jimmy Carter to the National Education Association, the largest labor union in the country.

This teachers’ union basically operates as a money-laundering operation for the radical Left: more than 98% of their campaign contributions went to Democrats in the 2024 election cycle.

This incestuous relationship isn’t new, either. The share of their contributions to Democrat politicians has exceeded 87% for every election cycle over the past three decades, according to available data shared by OpenSecrets.

No wonder Democrat politicians are freaking out. The jig is up.

It’s past time to get rid of this unconstitutional waste of time and money. President Trump campaigned on its elimination, was favored by voters on the issue of education, and won the parent vote by 9 points. He has a mandate to make it happen.

Shuttering the Education Department and dividing its budget among the states would allow for more local control as states spend education dollars as they see fit — fantastic for places that already respect the rights of parents to direct the upbringing of their children.

But in states like New York, where most politicians would rather cater to special interests, the money might be used to continue undermining education freedom.

On the campaign trail, Trump conceded this potential downside to his plan. At a Pennsylvania rally, six weeks before election day, he said, “I’m going to close the Department of Education and move education back to the states.”

The money should be used to lower the national debt. That means not spending it. On anything.

The budget was, I think, 7 trillion last year.

5.6 trillion was MANDATORY.

Cutting discretionary 100 percent (not including military) would save 800 billion.

We ran a 2 trillion dollar deficit.

Slashing non military discretionary by 80 percent would save about 600 billion dollars.

Where's the other 1.4 trillion gonna come from?

I bet we could get the same out of our military for 600 billion as we do for 800 billion with the RIGHT spending.

Hell, 5 trillion has been LOST.

We can cut Medicaid and save 300 or 400 billion there..if we SLASH it big time.

That would be a savings of 600 billion from discretionary, 200 billion from the military and 300 billion from medicaid.

1.1 trillion.

Still gotta dig up 900 billion...I don't see how SS and Medicare can go untouched.

But what is happening is a GREAT, GREAT start

“Money saved by shutting Education Dept.”

The NYP can’t tell a girl from a boy and We’re supposed to take their advice? Never. If taxpayer ‘union’ money goes to the fed unions and instead goes to state ‘unions’ what is the net gain? Hey NYP, nothing.

To help they can sell the buildings and property, use that money. Utilities and insurance ( if govt has to carry that) would stop along with maintenance. A lot of those buildings are in prime locations

You mentioned both Medicaid and Medicare, two major things here: The hatchet needs to go to Medicaid first as the illegals, fraudsters, and politicians use it as a money pit. Secondly, it is the congress who has raided Medicare for their pet projects and not being saved like it should, it is they who are the enemy here. I’ve been paying into that gummit scam for over 50 years and they still taking money from me and everybody else who is still working.

It is our worthless congress that is the enemy here.

“5.6 trillion was MANDATORY.”

Personally, I only consider Medicare, SS, and debt interest as mandatory - but I also see listed Medicaid, and “Income Security”, whatever the hell that is.

In any case, I suspect that all but debt interest is loaded with fraud, so lots of room. For starters, states administer Medicaid and many states, starting with California, ask if you’re a citizen - if you say yes, then that’s it, you get the dough, no further checking required - after all, would anyone ever lie about that? Tons of people 112 years old, and older on SS. So, lots of room.

Agreed,
Will be interested to what DOGE finds when they audit dept of education “ education”

Imagine it will be much like USAID, money laundering operation.

Dims are in real trouble, they are on the wrong side of 80/20 issues, and their cash cows are being slaughtered

Notice how small their “protests” have been, no cash, no protesters

“ Still gotta dig up 900 billion...I don’t see how SS and Medicare can go untouched.”

There is a big difference between “slashing” and getting rid of fraud, waste, and abuse.
Personal story, my wife received here Medicare summary and it showed 7 600$ payments for colonoscopy bags. She does not have one. We called Medicare to report the fraud and the lady said that this was a big scam going on right now.
Though Medicare is mandatory spending that doesn’t mean all that spending is legit, crack down on the system that allows this fraud will save hundreds of billions, add Medicaid and welfare you will add hundreds of billions more, and when defense budget is DOGEed(now a verb like googled) another few hundred billion
To rephrase a former political a hundred billion here a hundred billion there pretty soon you are talking real money.

Side note, it infuriates me when I hear people talking as if 36k is a drop in the bucket, ask yourself how many individual tax payments does it take to add up to 36k? My wife and I paid over 20k in fed taxes, for what to pay for part of a trans comic book in Peru?
USAID is just the beginning, when Elon and his team start climbing the stair of congress, that’s when the howls and nashing of teeth will become thunderous

Bringing medical pricing down would help enormously. I don’t except all the government numbers regarding discretionary spending vs. mandatory spending. There is waste everywhere, all areas of the government are riddled with it. There is a lot of low-hanging fruit. Growing the economy will help. It can be done. Selling national assets should be on the table. Treat the government like a business which is what they are starting to do. Problem is the government system the got us here is still in place. The way this government functions must radically change.

We are the richest country in the world, so they keep telling us. We should be able to cover our expenses and do it in style.

Property taxes where I live are already bled for all they are worth, & the inforformation I got shows that most of it goes to the schools. Of course, who knows how much might be saved by eliminating the Educ. Dept.? Might be enough to shift the whole thing back to the states.

The idea is to save money. The money should not go anywhere except to lower our debt. We are almost $40 trillion in debt.

Well, there probably are a large number of folks who are on various SS programs that maybe should not be.

Finding FRAUD isn’t picking on someone :)

If I specifically said JUST SS and NOT MEDICARE OR MEDICAID, I apologize.

But I don’t think I did that :)

Any federal money for K-12 education should only go to states that have school choice programs.

Touch SS and Medicare and Trump will ruin his presidency. Seniors will be at the White House with flintlocks if necessary.

Where can the other 1/4 trillion come from? Cut the waste out from people that are receiving benefits they don’t deserve like a lot of welfare.
That would save a lot of expense. If these people went back to work they would be paying in instead of milking the system.
