SHERMAN’S MARCH: The Movement upon Branchville; The Left Wing Only Thirty Miles Distant February 1 (2/7/1865)

PHILADELPHIA, Monday, Feb. 6.

The Richmond Whig, of Feb. 4, has the following: CHARLESTON, Thursday, Feb. 2.

A dispatch from Braxton Bridge, dated 7:40 o'clock last night, says: "The enemy advanced today across the "Whippy Swamp, driving our cavalry on our left, six miles from this place.

They are supposed to be in heavy force. There is also a column of cavalry on the Augusta road, moving rapidly from some unknown point.

Whippy Swamp is about thirty miles northwest of Pocotaligo, and about the same distance southwest of Branchville. Before reaching the latter place, SHERMAN's troops will have to cross several tributaries of the Combahee as well as the Edisto.

The enemy has possession of McBride's Bridge, and skirmishing is going on in front of Braxton Bridge.

The enemy is certainly moving on Branchville.

A dispatch from Adam's Run, says the enemy came up in barges to Young's Island, yesterday, about noon, and drove in our pickets. They have fired several buildings on the plantations and are returning.

This morning three steamers are off White's Point, and a landing is threatened.

Adam's Run is about twenty miles from Charleston."

From the Richmond Dispatch, Feb. 4.

It was thought a portion of SHERMAN's force might attempt to cross the Salkehatchie, seven miles above the railroad bridge. The Twentieth Corps was still at Robertsville. The Fourteenth Corps was crossing at Robertsville. The sum of everything that is known on the subject amounts to only what we have believed for several days, that SHERMAN is moving on Branchville in force.

Gen. BEAUREGARD has arrived in Augusta, and taken charge of military operations there. We presume the forces at Branchville are also under his control.

These newspapers were the smart phone news at the time. Look back in the 1950’s everyone riding on a commuter train found a way to read all kinds of newspapers and many hundreds of thousands of years before.
