I think that Zelensky understands what the rest of the world knows: now that Trump is on the scene, this war is ending soon. Zelensky wants to improve his position at the rapidly approaching peace talks. Thus, an attempt at proving that Ukraine has offensive relevance.

I suspect you are correct. If Ukraine had not been able to fight the Russians to a standstill, they would be a Russian proxy now.
It is a similar situation to Finland in Winter War, 1939-1940.
Russia may take a chunk of Ukrainian territory, but they have paid dearly for it.
The war has created a real Ukrainian nationality, to include pride of fighting of the Russians to a standstill.
