Reagan campaigned on ending the federal Dept of Education, which was created by Carter in 1979, but it was bigger when Reagan left office than when he started!

Reagan never had a Republican House to work with.

For many reasons, Ronald Reagan is one of my heroes. But he was naive in that he believed Democrats could be trusted to keep their word. And he believed that mainstream Republicans would always put their country first.

Trump has no such illusions. And so he will act accordingly.

Mainstream Republicans despised Reagan. They grudgingly accepted him, but GHWB was their “insurance policy”.

And he ignored the leftist March through the institutions domestically.

Reagan did a good job rebuilding the military. I enlisted in 1982 and morale was great during my ten years.

“But he was naive in that he believed Democrats could be trusted to keep their word.”

Can you provide examples?

How is that an example?

I don’t think Reagan was the scrapper that Trump is.

There was supposed to be increased border security and the amnesty was a one time thing. As typical, the dims didn’t uphold their end of the bargain.

How does that show that we was naive in trusting them?

He trusted the Democrats to increase border security, as was part of the deal.

They failed to do so.

Reagan foolishly allowed an amnesty for border control… that never happened.

Here’s one. Back in 1986 Reagan made a deal with the Democrats and the RINOs (the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986). Reagan would grant amnesty to millions of illegals already in the country. In return, Congress would work to secure the border.

The amnesty happened. And as we all know, the border was never secured.

Reagan did some great things, but he failed utterly on border security and illegal immigration - his amnesty without any border wall deal led to what’s happened in the decades since. And he did nothing to shrink government, despite all his principles, which I believe he sincerely held. His administration was riddled with RINOs, and their principles were the ruling principles of his administration.

The Act was law. Are you saying their was a bargain outside of the act?

The Act did not specify that the border was to be secured.
