The Kremlin, asked Wednesday about contacts with the administration of President Donald Trump over Ukraine, said that there have been contacts at the ministerial level and they have been intensifying recently.

Russia welcomes Trump's view that drawing Ukraine towards the NATO military alliance was an issue of concern to Moscow, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said.

"Suddenly, for the first time, President Trump, in one of his first speeches, criticizing the position of the administration of Biden on the Ukrainian crisis, bluntly said that one of the main mistakes was drawing Ukraine into NATO," Lavrov said.

"For the first time the problem of NATO was identified as something that the United States is ready to discuss seriously," Lavrov said.

Austria during the cold war was still under the NATO shield - preventing the USSR and satellite states from “friendly incorporation”

Invite Russia to join NATO.

An attack on one is an attack on all!

Russia’s safety guaranteed thru force of arms by 32 NATO signatories.

Should Poland screw with Russia....31 countries flail upon the Poles....

Russia asked to join when NATO was formed.....we said, nyet.

Russia lost alot of lives getting that land…. And the idea was to have a buffer zone all along… they wont give it up. Ukraine cannot take it back. So unless Trump intends on going to war over Donbas I dont see Russia giving it back.

“Exactly; make Ukraine like Austria during the Cold War, solidly neutral. Of course”

Any aid for rebuilding the Ukraine to be contingent on cleaning up the corruption.

In the Trump plan, Ukraine agrees to not attempt to take back Russian occupied territory through military or political means. And Russia only keeps occupied territory but not the annexed territory they don’t currently occupy.

Agreed, close to 1M Uke deaths of alpha males.
This is how Germany males turned into soi-boys. Too many German alpha males died from WW2 n German prisoners being enslaved by the Russians until the 1950s. Now 3 generations later German alpha DNA has been diluted to the point that immigrates rape their women, prostitute their daughters n do so with impunity.
I’m sadly confident the Ukes with reach soi-boy status in less than 2 generations.

Of course neutrality has to be enforced with arms (just look at Switzerland). But Austria wasn’t part of NATO and had no NATO troops or weapons stationed there. That’s why Russia invaded Ukraine, because we were making moves to admit it into NATO (completely in violation of previous written and verbal agreements).

This whole war was entirely preventable. Half a million or more dead, untold misery, the waste of hundreds of billions of dollars and the escalation of tension with a country with more nukes than us - all for the MIC and it politician/grifter hangers-on to make yet more money.

Both will to some extent - that’s what a compromise is, after all. Putin wanted more, and though he won’t get it, he won’t walk away with nothing.

However, he will actually have weakened his country, even with more territory - this war cost them dearly in blood and treasure, and they won’t recover the latter quickly or the former AT ALL. Russia was already facing a greatly reduced population going forward, and losing 200,000 or so dead males in their 20s will only accelerate this decline. Russia is now much more vulnerable to Chinese and Moslem expansion.

You are forgetting that Russia has won the spoils of 15 TRILLION dollars in rare earth metals on the land they occupy.

How are they going to develop it? They already have a very big problem with their educational system since the fall of communism. That’s one thing the communist bastards knew how to do, produce engineers. Russia has lost many of its best and brightest since communism fell, And losing a couple hundred thousand young males isn’t going to help that process, either. Besides, Trump has a very good shot at getting them to withdraw, by offering to wipe the slate clean if both sides return to the status quo ante, which means that Ukraine has all of its territory, the Russians inside Ukraine have their rights protected, and Ukraine never becomes part of NATO or allows NATO troops or weaponry on its territory.

Austria didn’t have the means to defend itself during the Cold war.

Another key point was that the USSR was MAD reasonable - while Putin isn’t - he’s more a loose cannon.

The war would have been prevented if, in 2008, Germany and France had not rejected Ukraine (and Georgia’s) request to join NATO.

Ancesthntr is correct - the best and brightest minds from Russia have been leaving ever since the early 2000s — because of Putin’s kleptocracy.

Ukraine out of NATO and Russia out of Ukraine. It sounds like a deal.

Why not let the new Russian Oblasts vote on whether they go back to Ukraine?

How about a compromise. Put them under temporary UN administration and hold internationally overseen elections to determine their future. And oh, by the way, when Ukraine holds its elections, why not have Russia, too, hold free elections? That would be a novelty.

No ATACMS permissions from President Trump, but he hasn’t stopped Ukraine from droning the hell out of Russia’s oil and gas refineries.
