The United States wants Ukraine to hold elections, potentially by the end of the year, especially if Kyiv can agree a truce with Russia in the coming months, President Donald Trump's top Ukraine official told Reuters. Keith Kellogg, Trump's special envoy for Ukraine and Russia, said in an interview that Ukrainian presidential and parliamentary elections, suspended during the war with Russia, "need to be done".

"Most democratic nations have elections in their time of war. I think it is important they do so," Kellogg said. "I think it is good for democracy. That's the beauty of a solid democracy, you have more than one person potentially running."

-snip-

The Trump plan is still evolving and no policy decisions have been made, but Kellogg and other White House officials have discussed in recent days pushing Ukraine to agree to elections as part of an initial truce with Russia, two people with knowledge of those conversations and a former U.S. official briefed about the election proposal said.

Trump officials are also debating whether to push for an initial ceasefire before trying to broker a more permanent deal, the two people familiar with the Trump administration discussions said. If presidential elections were to take place in Ukraine, the winner could be responsible for negotiating a longer-term pact with Moscow, the people said.

I wonder if there is any purple ink from that election 20 years ago. Was that Afghanistan?

Iraq. January 2005.

Fact is, some places aren’t capable of supporting an enlightened style of governance, and need strong man leadership.

I think you are correct. My relatives in Ukraine looked at post 1991 Russia as a success story. They said Ukraine is so hopelessly corrupt, you can’t even start a small business

Kursk will be crushed about the time they even start thinking about a withdrawal. Russia is already cutting the supply lines and threatening Sumy. The Russians are blanketing FPV drones in Sumy so the Uke army is melting away with deserations. Kursk will be the proverbial graveyard of the AFU and NATO advisors/soldiers of fortune.

By the end of February Russia will have achieved the destruction of half the remaining AFU. 90 days will see a complete collaspe of the AFU.

There will be no ceasefire until Russia's terms are meant.
Please enter another choice in order to continue the process.
Thank you

“Is the US debating with itself again, without consulting Russia?”

Yeah, duh.

Russia undertook real war...everything but WMD...to keep western troops out of Ukraine, and ensure no military threat on their southern flank.

And for some reason a bunch of dumbasses think they’ll agree to let western troops into Ukraine to police a ceasefire.

Such stupid is hard to comprehend.

They’re basically the same people. Belarus also.

This war is as stupid as the US Civil War. Should have resolved the slavery issue peacefully without bullets, like England. Northern elites paid terrorists and propaganda pushers to cause the south to secede. The same bad apples provoked Ukraine to suicide. We are at great fault
