Dozens of people are feared dead and injured after a barrier broke during a holy bath at a major Hindu religious festival in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.
Drone footage showed millions of devotees, shoulder to shoulder, arriving in the pre-dawn dark for the holy dip to mark the most auspicious day of the festival.
Video and photographs after the crush showed bodies being taken away on stretchers and people sitting on the ground crying, while others stepped over a carpet of discarded belongings left by people as they tried to escape the stampede.
Reuters cited one official who said at least seven people had been killed and another 10 injured.
One doctor told the AFP news agency at least 15 people had been been killed in the crowd crushes, but the government has not yet confirmed any casualty figures.
The Guardian cited a paramilitary officer at the scene who gave estimates of 200 injured and 50 dead.
A Reuters witness saw several dead bodies as he followed dozens of ambulances rushing towards the river bank where the incident occurred.
The Maha Kumbh Mela, or Great Pitcher Festival, is often called the world’s largest gathering of humanity, attracting more than 400m visitors over six weeks and is held every 12 years.

Millions of people taking a bath in the same river at the same time?!
UGH.
In a heavily polluted river that smells like a sewer.
Especially in India.
Here's a tip: DON'T go looking for photos of the Ganges River. Down that rabbit hole lies madness.

A filthy country, filled with filthy people. They can’t all be filthy, can they?
I hope the Indians who came to this country and work as doctors are clean.

I was actually shocked that he really let the Indians have it, as he had visited there many times before.

I’ve seen pix of the Ganges...I wish I hadn’t.
People bathing while turds, garbage, rotting bodies of animals and people float by.
The stench must be unbearable, but there they are.
Ehhh. I’ve seen those pictures.
Also pictures of miles and miles of homeless camp in Los Angeles.
Which is worse? deciding.....
Based on the photos on X I think the death toll is going to be much higher.

You mean, the Indians who are now American citizens, the same as you? What makes you think they aren’t cleaner than you are? They are certainly better educated. They don’t merely “work as doctors”, they ARE doctors.
Instead of referring to them as “those Indians”, try Doctor. Or sir or ma’am. Well brought-up people know how to address their betters.

I watched 5 minutes and will watch as much as I can take later on tonight.
I can’t imagine the stench.
Thanks for posting.

Get a grip. You know exactly what I mean. Stop with the virtue signaling.
Some of the most beautiful women in the world are from India: Deepika Padukone,
Rani Mukherji, and Anjali Sharma immediately come to mind.
Further, I would put Shah Rukh Khan, Hrithik Roshan, or Ranveer Singh’s acting skills alongside any Hollywood star; Bollywood would win, hands down.
Some people from our church did a mission trip to India ten years ago. The pictures/videos they took were almost beyond belief. Absolute filth everywhere they went. One picture I’ll never forget - a group of Indian men sitting in a huge vat of cow excrement because they believed it had medicinal and spiritual powers.
I’m not sure what the conditions in INDIA have to do with Indian citizens of America. By all means stop immigration from India, no need for it.
But to characterize Indian-Americans according to what you see in India is misleading at best. The average Indian U.S. citizen is more law-abiding, more successful, wealthier and dare I say happier than the average American. They certainly do less drugs, less addiction, divorce and abortion.
I’d say overall they are more educated and cultured as well. These people were the model immigrant. The problem of course now is the sheer number of them. So change the immigration polocy.
Those physicians may be clean and they’re probably smart. Unfortunately they bring with them their cultural preferences and they are very different from ours. I could give you some very funny and very sad examples.
I actually have no idea what you mean, though it certainly looks like racial hatred. Your sort make our side have to waste a lot of energy deflecting the racism canard. You don’t see the Prez talking like that do you? Nor even going after them much for deportation. The VP has an Indian family for God’s sake.
If you’re a Trump fan maybe try to follow his lead on this.
Can we refer the them by their Caste classification?
Are the river attendees mostly OBC’s?
Since this 12 year event usually last six weeks, is there a order for when various Caste are permitted?
