Marvel actor Anthony Mackie faced backlash after making the claim that the character Captain America doesn’t “represent” America.
Mackie, which took over the titular role from Chris Evans, made the comments Monday during a press event in Rome while promoting Captain America: Brave New World.
“For me, Captain America represents a lot of different things and I don’t think the term, you know, ‘America’, should be one of those representations,” Mackie said.
The actor attempted to elaborate on what the character meant to him.
“It’s about a man who keeps his word, who has honor, dignity and integrity,” he continued. “Someone who is trustworthy and dependable.”
The origin story of Captain America was a would-be Army enlistee that was rejected due to his size. He later received a serum that transformed him into a “super solider” and then joined the Army.
People quickly took to social media after the clip went viral.
“Disney needs to pull him off the promotional circuit for this movie,” one user wrote. “His political opinions have clearly overshadowed his understanding about the character, because like it or not a character with the name ‘America’ in it, with a costume based on the American flag, sure represents America.”
Captain America is often depicted in a suit which sports red, white and blue.
Political commentator Dan Bongino blasted the comments.
“Another s**t movie I won’t be seeing,” he wrote.
Disney previously faced backlash after comments circulated in 2023 where Rachel Zegler, the lead in the new Snow White film, decided to criticize the beloved classic.
“The original cartoon came out in 1937, and very evidently so,” she said at the time. “There’s a big focus on her love story with a guy who literally stalks her. Weird. So we didn’t do that this time.”
In the last film of the series - AVENGERS: END GAME, Captain America retires to marry his fiancé and gives his Shield to Falcon encouraging him to take over as the new Captain America.
What is a “Captain America?”
Call it CPT Woke then, ahole.
The last Captain America was played by another left-wing douchebag. Poor Cap - apparently forever fated to be played by douches.
Good grief, another loser commie actor.
I’ll cross that movie off my list
well HE sure doesn’t...
Another toxic lead actor torpedoes his brand. Rachel Zegler, move over.
Captain DEI
Another reason why I no longer watch any MCU films.
Was it ever on the list? :)
Almost NO movie should ever be on our lists...not because I want a ban :)
But because it’s almost impossible that WOKE won’t be in the movie.
BUT there is a site called “woke or not woke” that I read before seeing a movie.
Damn straight I read it before I saw Reagan...that was a very good movie.
I heard Twister and The Fall Guy are good movies with no woke.
They tried to squeeze climate change into Twister but the director wouldn’t have it.
Plus some good country rock songs in it like “Ain’t no love in Oklahoma” :)
Captain African America. This movie is going to be the biggest flop in history. It needs $1bln to break even. It is tracking for an opening weekend lower than Ant Man and Wasp, which was a flop that cost less than half this pile of crap cost to make.
The only decent ones were the first “Iron Man” and the first “Black Panther”.
Another comic book character.
So will I.
They could learn a thing or two from Michael Jordan, who himself said Republicans buy sneakers too.
Another actor who doesn’t understand the assignment. All he had to do was get paid a lot of money to portray a make-believe character and do whatever he could to promote the movie which would lead to more money. He needs to understand nobody gives a rat’s rear end about his personal opinion. On anything. Actors, musicians, athletes, strippers and hookers are all the same; they need to take my money, entertain me and then disappear.
His Captain America is disaster
For me, the best MCU movie was Captain America Winter Soldier.
Grownups still watch movies about comic books?
