Trump had ‘horrendous’ call with Danish PM over Greenland: Report

US President Donald Trump had a “fiery” and contentious phone call with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen last week, during which Trump insisted he was serious about taking over Greenland, European officials told the Financial Times.

The officials, who were not identified by the FT, said the conversation had gone very badly, with one describing it as “horrendous.” Another official said that Trump’s intention to take over Greenland was “serious, and potentially very dangerous.”

For weeks, Trump has voiced his interest in taking over Greenland, the Panama Canal, and Canada, in what analysts say reflect his hardball diplomacy. Frederiksen has asserted that Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory, is not for sale.

While her office dismissed the officials’ “interpretation” of the Trump call, one former Danish official told the FT that Trump also threatened to target Denmark with tariffs.

Trump’s critics have warned that his interest in Greenland — which occupies a strategically important position for the US — will destabilize the US alliance with Denmark, Semafor reported, while Trump allies argue that a bigger role for the US in Greenland would be vital to national security in countering Russia and China.

The call is “likely to deepen European concerns that Trump’s return to power will strain transatlantic ties more than ever,” the FT wrote, while Atlantic writer Anne Applebaum argued that for Denmark, “the most difficult aspect of the crisis is not the need to prepare for an unspecified economic threat from a close ally, but the need to cope with a sudden sense of almost Kafkaesque absurdity.”

Since his first term as president, Trump has floated the idea of annexing Greenland to expand US access to crucial Arctic trading routes and vast mineral resources. But he has recently doubled down on the proposal and has not ruled out using force to conquer the island.

The president has also expressed interest in reclaiming the Panama Canal which he claims has unfairly given China economic and security advantages in the region.

All of the countries who have enjoyed Not being Wiped off the face of the Earth since the United States has been protecting them should be a little more accommodating when President Trump calls and says the words United States Security Interest !
Since we are known for keeping the World safe.
President Trump is the first President since Ronald Reagan to understand the weight of that task.

I disagree.
Trump wants Greenland to declare independence from Denmark and then become some form of a protectorate of the USA. The people there would get our constitution and legal system and welfare, etc. We would then issue mining licenses for rare earth minerals and we would also issue leases to drill for oil.

55K people can fit into an average ACC football stadium.

If they want it, offer them full USA citizenship.

Trump’s critics have warned that his interest in Greenland — which occupies a strategically important position for the US — will destabilize the US alliance with Denmark, …

  1. What has Denmark ever done to defend the United States?
  2. Greenland is not in Denmark; whatever Viking conquest occurred has long passed its shelf life.
  3. Denmark may as well claim East Anglia too.
  4. If the PM is that angry she can break the alliance and look to the Russians.

you get the political mess that faces much of Europe today.

It's also because of generous welfare states and with USA protecting them under NATO umbrella.

But the party's over.

China isn't going to invade, but Greenland (and Iceland) is important to China's Arctic Strategy, and they are quickly buying interest to control Greenland's Radioactive and Rare Earth Elements, as well as establish a presence in the Arctic. They intend to establish strategic control of the very resources that make Greenland critical to US interests. The report linked below was written back in 2020, after Trump made his first bid to "purchase Greenland". China continues to acquire resources and seeks to control Greenland - and to deny the USA control of these resources. This is a serious matter, and Trump is serious and informed. Just as China moved into Panama while we slept, they are moving into Greenland. By annexation, treaty or other means, Trump intends the USA to have a say the future of Greenland. Essentially, this isn't USA vs Denmark, it's USA vs China.

Presence before power

We can give the current Greenlanders a “reservation” and just take the rest like we used to do in the good old days.

“Russia and China have been eyeing Greenland.”

Are China and Russia in the room right now?

You seem to miss the point that any incursion on the territory of a NATO country is an incursion on the territory of all NATO countries.

“Not MAGA, not pro-US.”

Invading the territory of an ally is pro-US?

“The Chinese .... will build a bigger base close to our tiny base.”

Really?? Without Denmark or the US or NATO being aware of a non-treaty country doing so????

Maybe it’s time to inform the people of Greenland what the lavish benefits they’ll receive in return for a vote to become part of the USA.

Canada could enter the bidding war, Greenland + Nunavut = almost all the Innuit and we double down on place names with a lot of K’s and Q’s nobody can pronounce. Actually in organizational terms, Greenland as part of Canada makes sense and it would then be a reliable long-range source of resources that lie behind all of this talk.

Next time I am ski-ing with the p.m. I will mention it. (jk)

yes. And Trump has not spent much time, but just his comments have spurred alot of discussion in both Greenland and Denmark. Greenland can vote how they want and of course Denmark is pissed but so what 45k residents may just vote to become part of the US. If the vote were taken today it would be close in my opinion.
