WASHINGTON, Monday, Jan. 23.

INDIANS ON THE OVERLAND ROUTE.

Telegrams have been received by the Government from all the principal Federal officials in Utah Territory, as well as from many leading citizens of Nebraska, urging the immediate creation of a military department of the Plains, to be placed under command of Brig.-Gen. CONNOR, for the purpose of affording adequate protection to the Overland Mail and Emigrant route between the Missouri River and California. Scarcely a day passes that the pressing necessity for some measure of this kind is not made still more apparent, by the most distressing accounts of Indian atrocities and depredations. The latest telegram from the scene of difficulty announces that on Saturday last, fifteen employes of the Overland Mail were still endeavoring to hold Julesburgh, and to defend several wounded United States soldiers abandoned by their comrades, against anticipated attack by a large band of the red skins. At last advices, however, it was doubtful whether they would be able to hold out, especially as Gen. CURTIS' troops at Cottonwood Spring, only 100 miles distant, were promising no relief. Julesburgh is the point on the Platte whence the road diverges toward Denver City. It is the great grain depot for the eastern section of the Overland Mail route; and if the savages take possession of it we may consider Overlain Mail service at an end until late in the Spring, for want of indispensable supplies. These troubles were anticipated by the mail contractors, who, months ago, urged upon the War Department the necessity for military protection, when the rigors of Winter should stimulate the Indians' instinct for pillage and murder. Their appeal, doubtless would have been heeded, had not a California Senator charged that the outrages were got up
