My grandmother and mother both kept large tins of lard out in garage and anytime they fried anything, they would use lard and the biscuits my grandmother used to make with lard were to die for.
I buy lard at the local Mennonite store in NY when in those parts. It keeps forever.
We gave up on any hydrogenated vegetable oil very early on in our marriage, (almost 40 years ago). We figured that butter and lard, for the few times we need it, was real food and our bodies knew what to do with it.
The other luxury item we indulge in is real maple syrup. We don’t use a lot of it so the expense is not a problem and it’s not HFCS.
McDonald’s used to cook in lard I beleive. Their fries used to be pretty good- that is no longer the case.
We always had lard too, and salt pork, and home made bacon, and beef tallow, and duck fat (fries cooked in duck fat were awesome!).
We at very well growing up!
my mother made SOAP out of lard!!!!!! we had it always in our home in the 40’s!
I use it to make pie crusts, and they are flaky and flavorful. Always get compliments.
Yep. My grandma used lard for pie crust, and would make it a little salty, not sweet. So delicious with pumpkin or apple filling!
