The secret rebuke stitched into Melania Trump's inauguration ball gown that'll leave fashion snobs and Jill Biden reeling, revealed

As the First Lady glided onto the stage at the Commander-in-Chief Ball, one of three inaugural celebrations she attended Monday evening, Melania Trump did more than delight her admirers. She silenced her critics – and they are, regrettably, many.

Melania, yet again, relied on her longtime stylist Herve Pierre, who on this occasion dressed her to stunning effect in a custom strapless white silk crepe gown with thick bands of black silk gazar trim.(snip)

Unlike stepdaughter Ivanka Trump's flowery overreach – settling upon an exact copy of Audrey Hepburn's 1954 Givenchy gown from the film Sabrina – Melania's choice was a subtle homage to mid-20th century fashion.

Melania, too, echoed Hepburn, however, in a more iconic cinematic role.

Pierre, an admirer of British photographer and costume designer Cecil Beaton, surely must have recognized the sartorial possibilities that Hepburn's appearance in 'My Fair Lady' offered. That film tells of an ingenue who becomes a star while wearing white and black couture (an outfit famously designed by Beaton).

Melania's Golden Age of Hollywood-look was rounded out perfectly with a borrowed 1955 diamond flower brooch by American jewelry legend Harry Winston and worn on a black ribbon choker.

The jewelry's styling, Pierre said, was also reflected by the gown: a ribbon encircling flowers. (Melania, one assumes, was the bouquet).

(snip) [Winston's] ultimately unrealized goal was to create a permanent collection of gems to be worn by successive first ladies, 'American Queens'.

Winston's third and final attempt to establish this new tradition was rejected by government officials in 1982. They (snip) believed, Americans would be offended by something suggestive of royal crown jewels.

In this way, Melania and Pierre's tribute to Winston speaks volumes.

Melania sees herself as a legacy builder – with or without the help of the fashion world.

At first I didn’t like the hat.
Then I realized it made her look like a female Clint Eastwood.

Don’t mess with her, “make my day” kind of hat.

Exactly!!

“A freeper posited that the hat allowed her not to have eye contact with the Biden’s, etc.”

Another poster suggested the hat was to sniff-proof her from Joe.

“i kn+ow i’m slow, but what was the rebuke?”

Didn’t you read the headline? It’s a secret. I didn’t get it either.

All things considered, I still think it was her best look of the past four, long, depressing, expensive, demoralizing, Anti-American YEARS!

I’m being generous, as she’s OUT THE DOOR! *SLAM*

Jill is totally, ‘off the rack.’ Nothing is tailored to fit her form...

...says ‘Fashion Maven Diana’ as she’s sitting here in her wool-lined leggings, one of Beau’s flannel shirts, her UGG boots and messy bun on display, LOL!

Meow! ;)

This thread needs some Audrey!

Rumor has it that there were 1,500 'costumes' designed just for Audrey in 'My Fair Lady.' The ones that made the cut are in the film, obviously.

Oh, please.

Both dresses were lovely.

It was a very chic boater.

And Mrs Trump, to put it inelegantly, looked bad@$$ while wearing it.

Well, i will concede it’s a shade better than her shower curtain dresses.....
and that horrible 20-something off the shoulder number she tried to pull off at 75 years old.

Ivanka looked gorgeous. Funny what good genes and cold hard cash can do for a girl, LOL!

Thanks for that link! I loved so many of the dresses/costumes in “My Fair Lady”, even the day dresses were great, such detail! — watched the Ascot scene last night... those hats were amazing!

(”My Fair Lady” is my hubby’s favorite musical... he knows Prof. Higgins lines by heart...)

(currently sporting navy yoga pats and a raglan-sleeved T-shirt with the Cat in the Hat and the word “Trouble” on it, messy braid/bun & Downy Woodpecker earrings - LOL)

We should make it a rule that when we’re being ‘catty’ on these Fashion Threads, that we have to confess to what we’re wearing, LOL!

I can’t remember the last time I wore heels. Or pantyhose.
Retired Life is Awesome. :)

My Mom (86!) still sews like a dream. She was Costume Mistress for our local Theater Troop for close to 40 years. She’s done so many creative costumes, but her favorites, too, were all the Black and White creations she got to design for, ‘My Fair Lady.’ Her costumes have been rented by lots of other theater groups, too. She’s a wiz!

Our family dog, Ginger, looked like a fox, so with a little bit of hair trimming and some make-up she played the Fox in MFL, too.

I always worked Stage Crew and Dad built the sets. I was a turtle in a children’s show one year. My one theatrical experience - I like it better behind stage. ;)

OMG!! I can so relate to this! My Mom did costumes too & she and both my sisters were in many shows, while I helped my Stage Manager Dad behind the scenes at local theater and then Bucks County Playhouse. I actually met my Hubby there, many moons ago, he was in South Pacific and our first kiss was behind the scenery :)
I did a couple shows, was a Shark in West Side Story and got to “pretend” spit at my twin sister, who was a Jet & did a few other chorus roles, but behind stage was much better for me!
I Love the Ginger story! Too cute!
