As the First Lady glided onto the stage at the Commander-in-Chief Ball, one of three inaugural celebrations she attended Monday evening, Melania Trump did more than delight her admirers. She silenced her critics – and they are, regrettably, many.
Melania, yet again, relied on her longtime stylist Herve Pierre, who on this occasion dressed her to stunning effect in a custom strapless white silk crepe gown with thick bands of black silk gazar trim.(snip)
Unlike stepdaughter Ivanka Trump's flowery overreach – settling upon an exact copy of Audrey Hepburn's 1954 Givenchy gown from the film Sabrina – Melania's choice was a subtle homage to mid-20th century fashion.
Melania, too, echoed Hepburn, however, in a more iconic cinematic role.
Pierre, an admirer of British photographer and costume designer Cecil Beaton, surely must have recognized the sartorial possibilities that Hepburn's appearance in 'My Fair Lady' offered. That film tells of an ingenue who becomes a star while wearing white and black couture (an outfit famously designed by Beaton).
Melania's Golden Age of Hollywood-look was rounded out perfectly with a borrowed 1955 diamond flower brooch by American jewelry legend Harry Winston and worn on a black ribbon choker.
The jewelry's styling, Pierre said, was also reflected by the gown: a ribbon encircling flowers. (Melania, one assumes, was the bouquet).
(snip) [Winston's] ultimately unrealized goal was to create a permanent collection of gems to be worn by successive first ladies, 'American Queens'.
Winston's third and final attempt to establish this new tradition was rejected by government officials in 1982. They (snip) believed, Americans would be offended by something suggestive of royal crown jewels.
In this way, Melania and Pierre's tribute to Winston speaks volumes.
Melania sees herself as a legacy builder – with or without the help of the fashion world.

I wasn’t a fan of the look. Harsh but classy. Someone noted today that she was sending a message to those who had f**ked with her family the first time around. If so, then the look was OK. But I preferred her feminine look in 2017.
Re the hat, Hubby said that she looked like Jim Carrey in “The Mask”.
A freeper posited that the hat allowed her not to have eye contact with the Biden’s, etc. at the inauguration. Seems plausible. At the Balls she was all smiles...with “friends.”
She is absolutely, stunningly beautiful. European woman know how to dress. They know how to look like a woman.
I did not think that. The hat was very chic, giving her a air of mystery.
At least that’s the last we’ll see from Jill Biden barring funerals. You folks just don’t give her credit. It takes a lot of effort to stalk, slay and skin sofas to put an original wardrobe together.
Yesterday was actually the LEAST offensive Jill Brandon has ever looked. Still a bit frumpy, though it was nice of her to bring her GRANDPA along for the festivities.
The classless are upset she wasn’t wearing a dress made from flowered furniture upholstery with a huge boob belt.
bump
i dont know... I personally dont find it flattering...
I thought Melania’s gown was lovely, very chic and very modern. The choker with the brooch was gorgeous, and very, very few women could pull that look off. Really did remind me of Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady. (of course, now I have the Ascot song in my head)
I had a mixed reaction to the hat. I imagine it was originally intended for an outdoor raised venue, but the angles of the indoor camera did not do it justice. When you looked from slightly below, her eyes were visible. I was hoping she would take it off for the luncheon and review, but perhaps it was pinned on in a way that made that difficult. I loved the coat dress (again, a look very few women can pull off well), and I did wonder if the buttoned-up, severe look was intended to make a “don’t tread on me” type statement.
I thought Ivanka’s retro-tribute gown was stunning ... Usha Vance’s also was perfect for her... it reminded me of a peacock feather, it seemed to change color with the light, sparkly but not in a cheap, over-flashy way
Ralph Lauren designed Jill’s. He also did the beautiful light blue Melania wore the first time. Maybe she chose someone else because Ralph was busy.
I didn’t mind the hat so much, but I thought she should have removed it for the luncheon, but what do I know...
I thought Usha’s gown was gorgeous. I also loved her pink ensemble. Christian Dior I believe.
Omg.....
in that purple getup, drjill never looked so ugly....
like a fat, overdressed homeless person.
Yeah ... Ralph was busy getting a Medal of Freedom — could Jill be so petty that she “ordered” the Medal to be given so that he would be obliged to dress ONLY her?
There are others who wore similar hats:
That was unbelievably horrific. No thank you to that memory !
Great retrospective fashion insights in there. My only fashion insights have to do with McDonald’s uniforms and the like.
Then I realized it made her look like a female Clint Eastwood.
Don't mess with her, "make my day" kind of hat.
