SHERMAN’S NEW CAMPAIGN: His Veteran Columns Again in Motion; Movements of the Right and Left Wings (1/21/1865)

The U.S. transport Fulton, WOTTON, Commander, from Port Royal, S.C., Jan. 7, via Fortress Monroe 19th inst., to U.S. Quartermaster, arrived Jan. 18 off Cape Hatteras. Passed the Ironsides. Also a sidewheel gunboat, supposed to be the Susquehanna bound north. Same day, passed the steamer Ericsson, bound south.

The U.S. monitor Patapsco was destroyed, off Charleston, at 2 A.M. on 17th, while doing picket duty, by a rebel torpedo. Forty or fifty of the crew went down with her. Their names were not ascertained up to the sailing or the Fulton.

Maj.-Gen. J.G. BAYARD, Chief-Engineer United States Army, and Major F.R. MUNTHER, Aid, came passengers in the Fulton, and landed at Fortress Monroe.

Mr. THOMAS MOMANCS, of the Fulton, brings us, as usual, full flies of papers from Savannah and Port Royal, and list of passengers.

DEPARTMENT OF THE SOUTH, Tuesday, Jan. 17, 1865.

The triumphant columns of Maj Gen. SHERMAN are again in motion, with every prospect that their future efforts will be equally as successful as those which have distinguished them in the past. Thus far the onward movement has resulted in the possession to us of the famous Pocotaligo Bridge, with all its defences, and the country adjacent. The movement was simple, and in its execution, splendid. The honors are to be ascribed to the Seventeenth Corps of Gen. SHERMAN's force, and the troops under Gen. HATCH of Gen. FOSTER's column. The Seventeenth Corps and a portion of the Fifteenth had been at and near Beaufort for some days, the first mentioned troops for the express purpose of assisting in seizing the railroad running from Savannah to Charleston, and the Pocotaligo Bridge.
