You realize the Feds can now Censor Free Republic?
FR (For how long?) ^ | Jan 18 | RF

Dismayed by the amount of support the TikTok Ban is getting and a Unanimous decision by the men and women in black robes further alarms me and will just embolden the Feds and Congress to engage in more online censorship.

How come some (most?) Freepers don't see this? Are you still watching the networks and believing the foreign entity stuff?

You understand that the legislation is broader than that?

No... But the Free Republic did.

Thanks for the tidbit. That explains the lack of the day long+ outages of the past. Knock on wood...

Yep, it is an advantage of storage, speed, load, security, and cost overhead.

Deep State controls the SCOTUS.

Good observation. It makes you wonder. It's not like for Gorsuch, Thomas or Alito NOT to dissent. At least one of them. They're always talking about following the Constitution. Yet they defer to Congress on this.

It's not making sense.

Except your viewpoint is what let’s them get away with tyranny. The court just told Congress that as long as they say “China bad” they can do anything they want. They can shut down any software, any hardware, anything that they can tie in the most vague way to China. Because China bad.

I’m not on Tic Tok or Rednote, but I wonder why they are restricted and nothing is being done about the Chicoms setting up Police stations in NYC
and LA, letting them buy our land nest to Military installations, come on Trump.

People are waking up. Next week will be interesting to see what happens.

This may be the "red pill" moment for Gen Z.

So who's the President on January 19?

Joe Biden.

He is a member of the Democratic Party.

So on Tuesday, the phones in the Capitol will be swamped and our Representatives will face pressure to do something about this law.

Otherwise, we may see a good number of incumbents lose in 2026. They'll lose in the primaries for being "anti-TikTok".

I think it's going to hurt the Democrats more than the Republicans.

So Trump may persuade Mike Johnson to come up with a new bill to legalize TikTok. Usually Johnson is going to do what Trump tells him to do.

Or maybe that won't happen because the Deep State controls our Elected Officials.

In the meantime, Rednote is the #1 downloaded app on Apple Store. Even though it's another "Chinese App".

Most FReepers are statist.

I haven't taken a count, so I'm not sure about most, but you can put me down for lots of.

I think that how dangerous this law is may lie in the nitty-gritty of its language, but I too have some concerns about it.

This is an ownership issue. That is why USSC did not come down on free speech. Ownership of key facilities can be affected by gov’mt.

It's not "TikTok Ban" law.

Instead it's "Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act".

The language is there to give the Feds the discretion they need to ban any app or website as long as it's associated with a "foreign adversary".

And it's okay with the SCOTUS.

"You understand that the legislation is broader than that?"

Yes indeed...
Every piece of legislation passed or SCOTUS decision made always hides one or more notorious agenders designed to strip more money and freedom from the peasantry...

What I find ironic is that TikTok truly allows free speech as where most U.S. platforms do not. Maybe this is why the kids like it. And even though they are not discussing it right now, there are quite a few older folks here on the FR who use it probably for the same reason.

All semantics and national arguments aside this is about the bigger picture in whole. And that is we DO NOT need government to put their hooks into the internet in any form or fashion period. Once they do it will be death by a thousand cuts before they are done.

Here is another one... The Dept of the Interior is allowing the Canadians and China buy up all the mineral claims on federal lands also.

This one is REAL bad...

In that case, the appropriate thing for us to do is to download RedNote.

It'll make our government appear heavy-handed. They can continue to ban apps and website. But the thing is this.

We're not Russia. Or China.

So this may backfire and our government may not anticipate the backlash they'll get in the near future.

Our politicians want to get reelected. So we'll see if they'll change their minds on this issue.

But you'd be ok with Congress banning all Chinese apps?

Yes. I'm ok with us treating China as our #1 intrinsic threat. We should be bankrupting them but since Nixon, we've done nothing but bankroll their rise militarily and economically. MAGA wants to see the downfall of the CCP. So do I.

It's not clear the national security concerns legitimizing the TikTok shutdown because it's a foreign social media app vacuuming personal information and working hand in glove with a hostile foreign power's intelligence services really apply to Free Republic. Especially since FR is not a social media app.

Unless, of course, there's something JR is not telling us. /s

In the spirit of defiance I would but... I know better than to use phone apps at all. And for security reasons I only haunt two domains, the FR and our own. And I personally set the dev standards on our own so I KNOW it is safe...

I need to read more about RedNote. How did it get out of their "Great Firewall"?

Not going to download it myself but I'm encouraging others to check it out.

“Especially since FR is not a social media app.”

The bill applies to more than “social media apps”.

(2) COVERED COMPANY.—

(A) IN GENERAL.—The term “covered company” means an entity that operates, directly or indirectly (including through a parent company, subsidiary, or affiliate), a >website<, >desktop application<, >mobile application<, or augmented or >immersive technology application<.

“Desktop Application” is a local communication, Instant Messenger, or Chat client installed in your computer or phone like Signal or Telegram.

“augmented or immersive technology application” means Virtual Reality game platforms.

It casts a huge net that does indeed include websites like the FR.

Well I can tell you this for sure... No matter what is said about it you will be handed more than you want. But that is a universal industry problem...
