And the Rothschilds weren’t really supporting the South? Pfft, let me tell you the real story!

But you didn't. So let's get some facts. In reality the Rotschilds sat out the CW and thus helped the North. To qoute Nial Ferguson "The Ascent of Money" (TAM):

"By the middle of the nineteenth century the Rotschilds had evolved from traders into fund managers, carefully tending to their own vast portfolio of government bonds. Now, having made their money, they stood to lose more than they gained from conflict. It was for this reason that they were consistently hostile to stirrings of national unity in both Germany and Italy. And it was for this reason that they viewed with unease the descent of the United States into internecine warfare. The Rotschilds had decided the outcome of the Napoleonic Wars by putting their financial weight behind Britain. Now they would help decide the outcome of the American civil War - by chosing to sit on the sidelines."

The Confederacy, consistently short of cash, tried to sell a cotton backed government bond. More from TAM:

"In 1860 the port of Liverpool was the main artery for the supply of imported cotton to the British textile industry, then the mainstay of the Victorian industrial economy. More than 80 percent of these imports came from the southern United States. The Confederate leaders believed this gave them leaverage to bring Britain into the war on their side. To ratchet up the pressure, they decided to impose an embargo on all cotton exports to Liverpool."

This caused an economic catastrophe in northern England, that went under the name of the Cotton Famine. But it pushed up the value of the Cotton Bond, making it an almost irresistible attractive investment opportunity for members of the English political class. However, the Rotschilds did not invest in this loan. Instead they dismissed it as being "of to speculative nature that it was very likely to attract all wild speculators..."

Ferguson notes that the fall of New Orleans to the Union forces may have been the real reason why the Rotschilds avoided the loan, but whatever the cause, the fact is that the Rotschilds did not back the South financially.

By 1863 mills of Lancashire had found new sources of cotton (India, Egypt, and China) with predictable consequences for the Confederate economy.

That is the economic facts.

You and that “Northern Banker'' bit, huh? Like none of the Southern paltroons and Fire Eaters were making a killing off the slave trade, right?

I don't focus on the Northern Bankers, though I expect they made money too. I mention them along with Northern manufacturing, Northern Shipping, Warehousing, Insurance, and the "factors" who purchased the cotton contracts in the South. The Northern "Bankers" are just one of many groups who were profiting from slavery in the South.

As for the Southerners making a "killing off the slave trade", they weren't the ones claiming it was wrong. That would be the Northerners who were profiting from it. Kinda like Apple using slave labor in China to build it's products.

BroJoeK of all people, posted a statement by Teddy Roosevelt that looks suspiciously close to what i've been saying all along. I was amused at the dichotomy of him always saying none of that was true, and then posting a statement from Teddy Roosevelt which asserts that it is.

Here it is, in case you missed it.

I liked it so much, I put it at the top of my homepage on Free Republic.

The following is from the left wing, but still makes more sense:

Northern, Northern, Northern’’. That's ALL that EVER comes out of you. It's never “Southern’’. Lincoln sucks’’, That's your other tune.

It's never Jeff Davis sucks.

No. It's never that.

And no Southerner ever profited off the slave trade?
Is that your argument?

Who invaded who? Yeah the South sucked too, but they didn't send an army to force the North to do what they wanted.

The North was the aggressors, and then they misled everyone about why they did it.

And no Southerner ever profited off the slave trade?

Of course they did, but they didn't constantly preach about how wrong it was while making 60% of the profits from it.

So far as the South was concerned, slavery was acceptable. It is the North that was always moralizing about how horrible it was while sucking up most of the money from it.

No of course Southerners didn’t preach about it, they were profiting from it. The North was the aggressors?

Gee, I thought it was the CSA that opened fire on Ft. Sumter. And don’t start with that bs that Lincoln sent warships. He was resupplying a federal installation and CSA shore batteries opened fire after seceding from the Union.

Your side lost Lampster. They lost in 1865 and they’re still losers today.
