As if Hollywood didn’t have enough trouble getting back on its feet, the Los Angeles wildfires suspended filming, destroyed homes of stars and crews alike and even threatened the landmark Hollywood sign that towers over the city.
The devastation hit as local film and TV industry workers were already struggling to adjust to vast technological, financial and global changes that have severely reduced local production activity and eliminated thousands of jobs that may never come back.
New data examined by The Times shows that a number of jobs in L.A.’s film and TV business has barely budged since the strike by actors and writers ended in fall 2023.
And with slower-than-hoped for recovery from the strikes, combined with continuing runaway production and industry contraction, on-location filming in the L.A. region fell 5.6% last year from 2023, FilmLA said Wednesday. The number of film shoot days last year totaled just 23,480, which was the second-lowest observed by FilmLA, which handles film permits for the region. The other was in 2020 when the COVID-19 outbreak disrupted production.
“As we await signs of continuing business growth in 2025, it is important we recognize that no aspect of life in Greater Los Angeles is unaffected by recent fire events and the heartbreaking loss of lives, homes, businesses and cherished community spaces,” FilmLA President Paul Audley said in a statement. “Many who participate in the region’s...”

Hollywood is owned by the CCP, so it's a silver lining kind of thing.
They should be able to find work now
.... if they can swing a hammer.
The film industry has been diversifying away from Los Angeles for many years. There’s a huge legacy infrastructure in LA, but more and more production hubs are popping up elsewhere. Interviews are done on zoom calls, actors submit self-taped audition clips, and there is less and less functional reason to be in LA at all. And now the legacy studios have largely been bought up by the streamers, and there’s no reason Comcast, AT&T, Apple, Amazon, etc. need to be invested in the disaster that California has become.
My favorite covid story was a Canadian actor, a young guy, who was reached via smartphone and invited to audition — and he was on a hunting trip somewhere in deep in the boonies. He somehow rigged up a semi-suitable space to self-tape an audition, but he had a Chinese fire drill situation to reach somewhere with enough connectivity to submit it. None of the actors or the directors had met in person until they assembled for the shoot.
Another factor affecting Hollywood (and other areas) is California banning gig workers or contractors. I understand many that work in Hollywood are gig workers. This is a further incentive to move productions out of the state. This is also further incentive for other contractors to move out of state.
Trigger Warning!! I’m going to say something positive about the Hollywood Movie Industry.
The opening scenes from ‘Remember The Titans’ were shot right around my house in downtown Atlanta. I had no contact with actors, beyond a bunch of extras, but a lot of contact with the support folks who wanted to hang different curtains in my house, plant fake flowers around the outside, and use my yard to line up shots etc.
Never met a bunch of friendlier and smarter folks. Everybody was on the ball, they kept a running record of who set foot on my property, and paid each time someone did, even when I wasn’t home and would not have known.
When they were through they cleaned up and removed everything. About two weeks after they left, a young lady came by and made sure I was happy and didn’t have complaints about anything.
A great experience and again, a bunch of nice folks.
AI will destroy Hollywood. It has already begun.
WRITERS STRIKE.
GAME SHOWS ARE MUCH CHEAPER
Cry me a river.
I guess they can go out and get a job and actually work at something productive for a living.
Die Hollywood! Die!
Since going digital for video, audio, and Computer Generated Imagery (CGI) add-ins, the costs have dropped dramatically, allowing companies to operate out of other locations.
The Arri Alexa camera, launched in 2010, was the final nail in analog film for television and movie production, and Hollywood along with it.
They should cancel the LA Olympics. Paris was insulting enough LA will be disgustingly terrible.
Most of the schlock they turn out is unwatchable.
AI movies can be made by anyone. The stories are more varied too.
I noticed the women all tend to be err... voluptuous... wow!

Hollywood did this to themselves. The award shows have a list that the studios must follow to be nominated.
