Are there any Marines on here that were on active duty in 1970? I'm having an online argument with someone who is an extreme braggart and bulls**tter. I tend to not believe a single thing he says. This wasn't the original discussion, but somehow he got to bragging he is a Marine that scored 500 points on his physical fitness test and didn't know anybody else who ever scored that high. I questioned that cause I know the current test has a max of 300 points. Well, he said his test was in 1970. Was wondering if any Marines on here know how the test was scored in the 70s. I did a search and came up with nothing except they changed to the current test in the 80s.
Yes, there were times it was Horizontal ladder and times it was Inverted crawl. I don’t remember when and why but I do remember it could vary by type of unit.
It was 300 Points,100 points for each event.
80 sit-ups in 2 minutes (as i recall).
20 Pullups (factual) and 3 Mile run, 18:00 or under for perfect score.
Did the 80 situps, 20 pullups (straight arms not curl) and did the 3 mile in 19:10. I credit another recruit with giraffe legs that motivated me to run with him.
True story, I started to heave right before finish line while continuing to run. LOL. I may have gotten 19:00 or slightly less time had I not. Our PT test was done right after chow,
Didn't get the perfect 300.

I can see your problem right there.
Find a better way to spend your time.
Brother in law went in about ‘77. Retired Master Guns after 22 yrs. Still raises the flag in the front yard every sunrise.
My two closest friends in life were Marines and I’ve known a few others on a more casual basis.
If this guy is a braggart and a bulls***er I don’t know how he could possibly be one of Uncle Sam’s Misguided Children. :D /s
Confusing a five and a three can be very dangerous in the military. Especially if you’re handling the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch.
Applauding your fitness back then! Truly impressive to a non-athletic type.
My 94 year old Father-in-Law served in the Marines in the early ‘50s. Should I ask him?
Thank You!
Well, I probably WAS in shape, but cigarettes, were not yet the evil that they are today, so they were worth noting as being part and parcel to daily routines, and while not good for us, neither a constraint to the degree that people today, attribute to smoking. I think I said that right?
The bottom line, I had youth on my side.
May you also have health for your future, as well as joy. It’s a wonderful time to be alive to see our hopes finally being fulfilled. So impressive to see so many veterans on this thread. Proud and grateful for every one of you!
Appreciate your appreciation.
Lots of good folks here at FR.
Off to la la land.
Good night FRiend.
Wow!
Semper Fi! 67-71. Still kickin’.
Swimming long distance as a routine, matters. Getting there and back, matters.
A friend swam long distance every day after school. That paid off later, when he was shot down and “had to swim for it: freedom.”
That is the point.
Mid 70s and that’s what I recall, but you could do push-ups instead of pull-ups. I couldn’t do pull-ups cause of a separated shoulder but could do push-ups all day. Sit-ups too for that matter. Now I have to rest between putting on my socks.
I’m 70, my first PFT was in 1975 (PullUps, Sit Ups & 3 Mile Run). I remember my Platoon Sergeant in 1977 telling sea stories about the old PFT, that had multi\ple events. He was a Marine from 1959 - 1980.

doesn’t say what the max score is.
I have my SF180 records and what I don’t have in them are physical fitness scores or marksmanship scores.(Had to do it every year)
I went thru boot camp june 1969. I seem to remember 300 but you ARE asking this of a 75 year old
I ran the 3 mile run in 19 minutes. I climbed the rope in heartbeat. I don’t remember crunches.
I remember straight leg sit-ups and the pull-ups-(killed me.) but not the numbers for them.
Anything else I don’t recall. I had to have passed or I wouldn’t have gotten the Title.
This is from google Ai
In 1970, the maximum possible score on a Marine Corps Physical Fitness Test (PFT) would have been 300 points; this remains the maximum score on the current PFT, with each individual event contributing to the overall score.
Maybe scan this message board - these all seem to claim 300 back then - see the 5th one in.

good luck.
hey kiddo, nice to “see” you again.
Happy New Year.
This "online acquaintance" is probably a 15-year-old girl.
