Trump considers executive order hoping to ‘save TikTok’ from ban or sale in U.S. law

President-elect Donald Trump is considering issuing an executive order once in office that would suspend enforcement of the TikTok ban-or-sale law for 60 to 90 days, hoping a brief reprieve for the Chinese-owned app will net him an early victory.

Trump has been mulling ways to save the day for the wildly popular video app, talking through unconventional dealmaking and legal maneuvers; these include the executive order that could unravel the Biden administration’s nationwide ban of the app now scheduled for Sunday, according to two people familiar with the deliberations, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss private talks.

Trump has expressed a keen interest in being seen as rescuing a platform on which he’s been told he’s widely admired, leading political aides and business allies to scramble for options that would allow him to deliver on his campaign promise to “save TikTok,” as he has said repeatedly on his more than 14 million-follower TikTok account.

“I have a warm spot in my heart for TikTok,” Trump said last month.

The main question is how. A law signed by President Joe Biden last year calls for the app’s owner, the Beijing-based tech giant ByteDance, to sell the app by Jan. 19 or face an immediate ban. The Supreme Court, which considered TikTok’s challenge of the law last week, is expected to allow the law to proceed as planned.

Trump Girl, I appreciate your reasoned counter-argument. Food for thought there.

MinorityRepublican, eh not so much.

Anyway, the Chinese communist government only owns 1% of TikTok. TikTok’s defenders are quick to point that out. But it is a “golden share”. That should be of concern to every American.

Trump was against selling US Steel to a Japanese corporation for national security reasons. I would apply the same reasoning to TikTok. Ban it for national security reasons.

Your mileage may vary. And I respect that.

So what was a national security threat is cool now. And other than what people posted there, nothing changed. Mental whiplash.

The way to save TikTok is for Musk to buy it. Might make a good complement to X in a merger.

Musk and his money will save us all.

Again, what changed other than people posted videos promoting Trump?

Trump used TikTok to campaign in 2024. He didn't do that in 2020.

So since he used them, the national security threat went away? If so, in what way did the threat go away other than than he changed his mind?

I wonder what the difference is between the information Gik Tok collects on users and what Apple, Google, Facebook, etc. collect. Perhaps a better law would be to outlaw a company from collecting data. All companies.

That’s true. Apparently 4 years ago they were collecting info that created a national security threat.

I wonder what that information was and how it differed from all the other companies? I highly doubt TIk Tok can collect data the others can’t. Seems to me that it wouldn’t matter who collects it. IMO this is more about the government’s desire to control “misinformation” and alternative viewpoints.

Still, we need to ban every freaking app and tech company from collecting any of your information.

On this matter I find it creepy that Trump has turned against his own common sense on this issue. A complete reversal. And it appears that he is doing so for his own benefit, and not for the good of the nation.

How so? Be specific. Everyone is collecting data. Not just TikTok.

Trump was initially wrong in 2020. He has realized the merits of keeping TikTok in 2024.

The Deep State wants us to get rid of TikTok.

You either believe in censorship or you don’t.

TikTok actually has freer speech than Fakebook and the rest of the fact-checked censored hell of social media. TikTok helped Trump win by reaching young people. If they can do it to TikTok they can do it to X(Twitter). For these reasons Trump is right.

“Why protect this Chicom spy operation .”

What kind of secrets are they getting? What new dances and music teens like? Cooking secrets? Celebrity gossip? What are they getting that they cannot already get from other public sources or other spy methods in the works?
