Marco Rubio Issues Stark Warning About Vladimir Putin During Confirmation
Latin Times ^ | 1/15/2025 | Demian Bio

The nominee argued that if Ukraine is not in a strong position to negotiate it will be imposed "neutrality" only for Russia to rearm and attack the country again.

Secretary of State nominee Marco Rubio highlighted the need to support Ukraine in its war with Russia in order for Kyiv to be in the best position possible to negotiate a ceasefire. Otherwise, he said, Russian President Vladimir Putin will seek to impose "neutrality" on the country to buy time and attempt another large-scale invasion.

Rubio made the assessment while claiming the war needs to end and criticizing the Biden administration for "not delineating an end goal." The "however much for however long" approach is not "realistic," Rubio said during his confirmation hearing.

In that context, he said the "war of attrition" is taking a heavy toll on both countries, but it is unlikely any will achieve total victory.

Consequently, he said the key will be to avoid an outcome where Putin has "maximum leverage so he can impose neutrality on Ukraine, rearm and do this again in four, five years." "It is important for Ukrainians to have leverage but they will have to make concessions too," Rubio said, echoing President-elect Donald Trump's call for an end to the war.

Trump was never pro-Putin just anti-Cold War part II.

And now it is not even Cold. What a disaster.

Rubio’s assertion that “The nominee argued that if Ukraine is not in a strong position to negotiate it will be imposed “neutrality” only for Russia to rearm and attack the country again.” omits the fact that Russia is already armed to the teeth and is increasing its military mobilization every day.

I’m going to file this under “stupid things that only neocons believe.”

Rubio is not a good fit for this position.

He does not recognize reality.

What a disaster.β€œ

I will withhold judgement given the context. Any hint of even the slightest softness toward Russia is going to get pounced on and the rats are hoping for it.
Big picture

Putin obviously wants neutrality; he's said so, but as long as ethnic Russians get to be part of Russia, whether he would use Ukranian neutrality to stage another invasion, Rubio doesn't know that.

Totally!

Yeah I meant that the war itself under Biden has been a disaster.

Europe is going downhill. Marco will focus this country on Latin America. The left is easier to put in their place as they need guns to keep power.

Ukraine leverage ?

Losers have no leverage, zero , none

Surely Trump knows this, whether Rubio does or not is open for debate.

Best thing to do is cut off the funds , the situation will sort itself out.

Americas border security should be priority #1, if it isn’t he’ll get screwed by the Swamp once more.

This hearing was not contentious like the Hegseth one. Easy to see why. Rubio is one of them and foreign policy requires conversations more intellectual. The democrats blew their wad on Hegseth-expecially the women-idiots. Bondi was slightly better but what I like is the evidence that we’re not taking it anymore.

The Ukraine has no leverage because it has squandered the gifts that have been bestowed on it by mostly foreign interests who wish to drive the senseless death and destruction rather than generate the leverage needed to put the Ukraine on a firm footing to negotiate a strong

If the Ukraine had used it's NATO tanks, Bradley's and Javelins to build a strong line of defense, had not diverted so much of it's assets to the ill advised and disastrous Kursk adventure and had stockpiled the 30% of the US HIMARS inventory and a similar fraction of the NATO Storm Shadow missiles rather than squander them on totally pointless propaganda driven targets the Ukraine would be in a very strong negotiating position

If the Ukraine would have conserved it's army manpower and would have had hundreds of thousands of soldiers that have been killed in the meat grinder to defend the country.

Now the sudden realization the jig is up that the fact that the Ukraine has no leverage to negotiate is sinking in.

In a normal world, the Ukrainians would be facing unconditional surrender given their current status of forces and the destruction of their economy and their industrial base.

Marco has theright appraoch.BUt the fact is that AMerican Military might , not NATO will be the deciding factor here.
NATO is useless.

1)We have to understand that Putin must be made to believe he will see US Marines in the Black Sea with a couple of carrier task forces,\, readying to come ashore. THAT will be hard for Amrican Patriots to swallow. Its a Biden made mess, and unfortunately the old C___T has left us to clean it up.

2)THe other approach is to ruin Russia economically. That will take time we likely do not have. But I hope this is what Marco can do rather than the first option.

China wants the first option. Something to remember.

I’d argue that Putin couldn’t possibly be stupid enough to start another war... but then again, I made the same argument before he started this one. Seriously, I thought all of Biden’s warnings were just trying to make it so he could claim that his toughness forced Russia to back off. I was gobsmacked at how preposterously foolish Putin was.

The most important nomination about this matter is Tulsi Gabbard.

She will sterilize the intelligence briefings provided to Congress and the President. Bills and policy will reflect it.

Rubio is in trouble here. He may be compelled (not forced) to resign as Tillerson was when his influence was not great enough. But much more important, Rubio will be absent publicity as JD Vance asserts the inside track for 2028. Leaving the Senate may hurt him badly, especially when his attempts to get on TV result in him having to asset the Trump position that opposes his own.

I do think Trump made this nomination to erase JD Vance competitors. Probably offered it to Swamp Filth DeSantis first.

“Putin obviously wants neutrality; he’s said so,”

He also swore he would never invade Ukraine even as he was building up the invasion force.

“... but as long as ethnic Russians get to be part of Russia,”

Right, and the disastrous invasion of Kiev was just a feint. Lose half your army and mobilize the entire free world against you to simply distract from an escalation of a war you’re already in.

FFS, Kherson is only 13% Russian, almost identical to the Russian proportion of Kiev, so why did he claim to annex Kherson but disavow the intent to annex Kiev?

It was our aggression that provoked this war.

We fomented an illegal coup in Ukraine and installed a government hostile to both Moscow and the ethnic and culturally Russian population in Ukraine.

We promised the Russians no eastward expansion of NATO and expanded it to its border. Ukraine, in its Constitution, promised to be a neutral country and failed to be one.

The Russians repeatedly sought with Minsk Accords and in Turkey in March of 2022.
