Red meat. How much is too much?

Posted on 01/14/2025 5:00:50 AM PST by LouAvul

A chef (Gordon Ramsey?) had a video where he's preparing the perfect hamburger. He made the statement that he only eats red meat twice a week so that he can indulge in ground beef.

What say ye? Red meat is unsafe if eaten more than twice a week? Three times a week?

Enquiring minds want to know what Freepers think.

Red meat is harmful if you have excess iron. You can donate blood to keep a good level of stored iron, and then you can consume a lot of meat without problems.

Doctors use the blood ferritin test to know how much iron a person has. The ideal value is between 70 ng/ml and 100 ng/ml. If a person’s ferritin is less than 70 ng/ml, he has a deficiency.

Depends on whether you want to be healthy or not. i eat me at least 3 times a day. 75 and I could outwork a lot of the teenagers these days.

Eating more than one’s own body weight in red meat every day is probably unhealthy. Anything less than that is just fine.

Don’t “eeeet ze bugggzzzz”.

The question is: How much is too little. The 3 people that I know with cancer were vegans and one of them had their doctor immediately ask if he ate meat. He told them “no”, and the doctor said “you better start”. He still died from leukemia a couple of years later (that was before Fen-Ben was widely understood to deal with cancer).

I only care enough to have clicked on this thread to state that I don’t care. Steak and I are friends.

“75 and I could outwork a lot of the teenagers these days.”

That’s not saying much, but congrats on staying healthy!

Red meat and processed food aren’t really good for the gut. They won’t kill you but it is basically a sign of bad diet.

One of the reasons red meat is valuable is its iron content. Chocolate and molasses also have a lot of iron. The more foods with iron you consume, the less meat you need.

BINGO! Same here, exactly.

What is and is not healthy to eat is a combination of personal opinions and government propaganda.

If someone wants to eat meat occasionally, that OK with me. But don’t look down on me if I eat it all the time.

I’m on the Carnivore diet and eat red meat 4-5 days per week. Pork, shrimp, and chicken as well on the other days. I haven’t been this healthy since I wrestled in high school 30+ years ago.

Red meat is also an excellent source of zinc.

I’d say dosage (ha ha) depends on the individual.

If folks are interested/concerned about how much they should eat, if they’re fortunate enough to have a doc they trust, run the question by your doc.

Otherwise go by your labs and what you can afford.

Meat is good for you.
Leafy Greens can be part of a good diet.
Sugar is Poison.

Everything else is just poppycock.

Next question.

You can out work a teenager by getting up from your gaming chair

“If someone wants to eat meat occasionally, that OK with me. But don’t look down on me if I eat it all the time.”

Dr. Berry puts it best: Literally every animal on the planet eats what’s good for them (or they’d gone in a flash), and none of them ask Washington, DC whether it’s ok...they just eat what tastes good to them. And it was the same for humans, before the lobbyists took over DC.

That’s good enough for me.

I was going to say that if you have that condition, known as hemochromatosis, you probably shouldn’t eat any.

And yes, donating blood is a good way to deal with it.

I don’t know much about Ramsey, whether he leans right or left. The Lefties are all about getting rid of meat.

A friend challenged me to a 30 day carnivore diet. It’s an easy diet to stay on. Filling & one doesn’t have to think too much about food. I’ve had good results after just a week. My friend says when she’s on carnivore all her aches & pains go away.

Personally, I say All Things in Moderation. :-)

beat me to it. back in the day Stevie nicks sang “on the edge of seventeen”. well today I sing “on the edge of seventy”, still building stuff and still telling the young guys at the lumber store who always ask me if they can help me load up plywood or drywall to “stand back...wouldn’t want YOU to get hurt”. true story. my personal saying is “I can do anything I could do when younger. it just takes a little longer and hurts a little more”.
