The bullying of Kelaia Turner was so bad that, at one point, even her glamorous teacher allegedly joined in — driving the schoolgirl closer to taking her own life.
That's a claim at the heart of a shocking lawsuit against Olivia Grace Bennett and her colleagues at Dr. Phinnize J. Fisher Middle School in Greenville, South Carolina.
Kelaia, then 12, faced merciless bullying from five classmates, who called her 'roach,' and 'a man' and physically attacked her, the suit alleges.
Rather than stopping the bullies, Bennett, 26, was allegedly 'complicit,' pointing at the abused student as her classmates jeered.
In 2023, the tormented girl tried to kill herself — a failed attempt that left her with brain damage and requiring round-the-clock care.
Her devastated mom, Ty Turner, and other family members are suing the school district, Bennet, and seven other educators for failing to answer their frantic calls for help.
'They used to teach us, 'Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never harm me',' the mom told WYF44.
'Unfortunately, words do hurt.'

Not a good situation. Not thinking. If she had stood up and aggressively stopped it, what would have happened?
Exactly.
Even when I was in elementary school I never trusted the “popular” teachers. Nobody should work that hard to be friends with students.
In a way public schools are hamstrung because the only reason to rebuke killing (through words or otherwise) is the sanctity of human life, and neither our society nor our public schools are able to give the bullies the only effective and true reason to treat ALL innocent life as sacred. The anti-bullying programs cause even more bullying because they are forbidden from giving the real reason.
Until our society figures out that the Bible really is the one worldview on which a just society can exist, people are gonna be the animals our whole society assures them they are.
Agree. The teacher’s self description and Instagram nonsense reveal her to be rather immature. I tend to believe she was a participant as alleged. Still wanting to fit in with the “cool” kids.
I never really experienced bullying, except due to being a jock, I was assumed to be stupid. This was mainly in college.

The teacher joined in. And the kids sneaked into her ICU to take mocking selfies with her?
Utterly insane. All should be headed to prison for a decade.
This is really tragic. Yet a collective bullying situation like this often occurs in a classroom with the teacher often subtly or overtly involved. School would better spend their money understanding and responding to this harmful dynamic instead of worrying about and promoting gender dysphoria.
Wow, do you realize what that means? It means a 12 year old schoolgirl is more vulnerable and emotional than a 78 year old multibillionaire who thrived in the NYC and international real estate world!
Yes, indeed.
I went to catholic school grades 1 -10. You had to be tough to survive the bullies.
Glamorous teacher?
Lock her up, after she’s horse whipped.
Don’t think it is a girl. Looks more like a boy. How do you tell now days? Gender Dysphoria is epidemic
Good grief... the 12 year old girl is brain damaged and the pictures show it to be serious...
This ping list is for the other articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)
The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.
Parents need to protect their kids.
The crap I took from other kids, particularly in jr high (7th and 8th grade) was BRUTAL.
That's why when we homeschooled, although my kids did go to some years of public high school in a very small, non-welfare town high school, I promised myself that I'd NEVER make them go through that. Not at that age.
Trump is an adult with experience in fighting.
He’s not a 12 year old girl.
Your advice is a recipe for the kind of disaster this situation ended up being.
I raised my children for 1950s America, not 2010 America.
All of them were bullied because they were sweet, kind, honest, and respectful. The kids in school were feral. Their well-earned reputation for being good kids, smart kids, sweet kids, made a big difference when other cretins started bullying them.
I learned quickly that the system protected bullies. I also teamed up with an attorney that was willing to sue the school district.
When I came through the school house doors, everyone knew me as a “no holds barred” mom that would make life hell for anyone that messed with my kids. I had no problem letting the administration know that I would sue them, the ISD, and the parents of the bullies.
Even when the district told me they couldn’t release information on any student, I had ways to get the home addresses of the bullies.
Twice, I pulled my kids out and homeschooled them.
By middle school, everyone learned my kids were not to be touched.
One fool “racked” my eldest as they were changing after football practice. I was at the principal’s office the next day. Kid was suspended and kicked off the team.
Another fool grabbed the Trump lanyard off my youngest son’s neck and shoved him into the lockers (my son didn’t know this kid and had never spoken to him in his life). The resource officer was extremely helpful once I advised her to preserve all evidence as she would be hearing from my attorney. I would also be going to the media and writing an article about it for a popular news site.
Kid was suspended.
I instructed the resource officer to let the boy know that if there was any retaliation, I would press criminal charges and sue them into oblivion in civil court. I had time enough, money enough, and patience enough to bleed his family dry in legal bills.
You don’t let the district tell you how they are going to handle things. YOU tell the district how they are going to handle things. They expect you to be meek and compliant. NEVER be meek and compliant. They expect you to respect their authority. Don’t ever play that game.
They are your kids. FIGHT.
Nasty awful teacher.
My Dad was a Marine. He taught me to fight back. Yeah I got in trouble a few times for it, but usually a single well placed punch ended the harassment for good.
Trump is 80. These kids are 12. Just a tad bit of difference.
Not everything is about Trump.
