Despite nearly 1,000 cars being set ablaze, hundreds of thousands of people in France welcomed the New Year with largely peaceful celebrations, according to Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau.
Retailleau announced late on Wednesday that 984 cars went up in flames across the country. Some 420 people were arrested, 310 of whom were taken into police custody.
The minister called the figures unacceptable. "This violence is the product of a brutalization embodied by cowards and thugs who attack the property of often humble French people who do not have the means to protect their vehicles in private car parks."
But the crowds on the Champs-Élysées in Paris were not affected as they celebrated with stage shows and music on the famous boulevard, capped by a fireworks display at the Arc de Triomphe but the interior minister.
The event, which like last year had been expected to attract around 1 million people, was largely peaceful, according to initial reports.
Some 10,000 police officers were deployed in the French capital and special security precautions were in place for the party on the main thoroughfare, which was closed to traffic.
Visitors had to pass through several security gates, while fireworks and glass bottles were banned, which severely restricted the consumption of alcohol by revellers.

The Interior Minister has learned well from the American Press.
“Celebrations”
what I’m about to say is true- at my job, in my office, one of the folks that work there was put on leave because they were accused by several of the workers of using black magic. I am completely serious. Reports were taken, and about 4-5 people including a manager confirmed she was using black magic against her enemies in the office. This where we are in America.
Fiery, but mostly peaceful again? I really hate peaceful celebrations. /S
There were, of course, no “disruptive elements” in the whole celebration.
France is literally overrun by a certain subversive demographic, and the authorities are almost helpless in the face of disturbances they raise. Not because of lack of means of control, it is much more the lack of will to apply those measures.
This has been going on for decades in France. I know because I would read about this during W’s term.
Imagine if it were 1,000 EVs.
Black magic is real, how do you think Trump won? /S LOL
“cowards and thugs”
No doubt circumlocutions for the usual suspects.
Euphemism for Arab-Islamic rioters:
1. “N. Africans.”
2. “Youths.”
Searching for motives...
Guess what else has been going on in France for decades...
"Crowds and Power is a book written by Nobel laureate Elias Canetti in 1960. It is a prophetic analysis of human groups and their interaction with power1. The book explores why humans who prize individuality seek out membership in crowds and how rulers exploit that desire ..."
The crowd is no accident. It's important to make the connection for how 'rulers' exploit crowds.
don’t the locals in Detroit set fires on Oct. 30th?
Yes, Devil’s Night. Have heard many stories about it.
one kilogram (kg) is 1000 grams
one kilometre (km) is 1000 metres
one kilobyte (kB) is 1000 bytes
one year celebration of foreign usurpation (fU) is 1000 burned cars
They weren't "Celebrations." They were riots by a completely dysfunctional segment of French society.
I was in Detroit the morning after Devil’s Night one year (back in the 1980s). The headline of the newspaper was “Detroit Survives Devil’s Night” with a picture of a building blazing on fire with a kid throwing a Molotov cocktail at it.
