Here we go again.

If this article is really about a CDC study, then why is there no link to the original NEJM article allowing people to read it for themselves instead of linking to some conspiracy theorist's creative interpretation of it?

And of course, no such conspiracizing would be complete without the obligatory "It was created in a lab!" ridiculousness. First of all, influenzas are the most mutable family of viruses known. They are constantly changing, such that viruses that were circulating a few years ago have completely disappeared and new viruses routinely begin circulating. This has been going on since before recorded history; why do people so eagerly lap up these stories that humans can suddenly create or engineer viruses to become human pathogens? Second, laboratory research of viruses is crucial in our fight against infectious disease. Would we rather have our current arsenal of antivirals, physical measures, and vaccine technologies to control virus outbreaks, or would we rather revert to the days before modern medicine, when people knew nothing about infectious agents and had no idea what was going on or how to control it even when millions of people were dying? The fact that we keep studying pathogens is NOT a smoking gun that we are somehow making more pathogens.

This particular clade of H5N1 has not caused many human illnesses, and most of them did not require hospitalization. It is not transmissible between humans. Gee, if there were a goal of creating another pandemic virus that would maybe even surpass the death toll of Covid, then those responsible for supposedly creating such a virus failed miserably, didn't they?
