Meteorologists are raising alarms over worsening polar vortex conditions that could bring extreme cold and widespread disruptions.
So far, this winter has seen one of the warmest Decembers on record in much of the northern United States. Though many residents experienced snow around the holidays, snow coverage was still at or near 20-year lows.
However, the polar vortex could bring severe weather conditions, including heavy snowfall and freezing temperatures, that could affect travel conditions or prompt school closures.
According to temperature outlook data, mapped by Pivotal Weather, North Dakota could see temperatures as low as 8 degrees on New Year's Day and wind chills as low as -14 degrees. Meanwhile, other states like Minnesota, Montana and Wyoming could see temperatures in the teens.
Surrounding states including Colorado, Idaho, Washington, South Dakota, Iowa and Michigan will also be hit by the polar vortex, with very cold temperatures in the 20s and 30s on New Year's Day, forecasts show.
A polar vortex is a stream of cold air that normally spins around the poles high in the stratosphere. The phenomenon, which blasts Arctic air across part of North America, can disrupt weather patterns.
When the polar vortex becomes weakened, it can lead to colder weather in the eastern United States. When a sudden stratospheric warming occurs, the vortex stretches or even splits with its center away from the pole. The stretch causes the air "leak" into the atmosphere, making the winter even colder.
AccuWeather reported that the vortex could prompt "some of the coldest air of the season" during February.
Meteorologist Ryan Maue said on X, formerly Twitter: "And, just as I was noting that the 'Arctic cold' wasn't of 'old fashioned' vintage, the GFS 18z drops -36°C at 850 mb into the central U.S. That would be...

I remember January 1962 when a storm blasted across the High Plains, dropped temps to record lows and broke up many of the paved roads from the Rocky Mountains to the Ozarks.
The March snow storm of 1968 which shut down the High Plains for weeks.
The fall and winter of 1976-77. Brutal cold from Nov to March. January 1977 had total cloud cover that month and it snowed in every state!
It was used as proof we were entering THE COMING ICE AGE!
Now they are trying to frighten us with “Polar vortexes?”
Atmospheric rivers were discovered in 1990’s so you probably didn’t hear of it when you were younger. A single one can carry more water than the Amazon River. There are 3 to 4 of them always present in the atmosphere.

I don’t know when TV talkers discovered them
Flat lander chiming in. That is an amazing breaker for California. I’ve spent some time in the LA area around this time of the year. The 20+ foot breakers get the better surfers excited. I’ve also spent some time on the west coast of Florida. The Gulf of Mexico doesn’t produce big enough swells for any serious surfing.
“Must be bird flu”
That would be USDA Bio-lab sponsered bird flu out of Georgia .
Pretty normal for them this time of year, isn't it?
Paging Dennis Quaid and Jake Gyllenhaal!
The sky is falling!
The sky is falling!
If you want to know the current chance of wintry weather for the next few days, check out “Ryan Hall Ya’ll” reports. He just did an update this afternoon and said he will be doing one daily for the weather system approaching the east south east. He is calling for snow, and ice, for IL, OH, KT and a few other states. Plus some havy storms and possible tornadic activity for the LA, MS, AL states in the next 7 to 10 days.

(It’s only 10 minutes)
Meteorologists have turned into total fools
“winter weather” with a press agent.
“Surrounding states including Colorado, Idaho, Washington, South Dakota, Iowa and Michigan will also be hit by the polar vortex, with very cold temperatures in the 20s and 30s on New Year’s Day,”
Well, I’m in inland WA and it’s 36°; I wouldn’t exactly say that’s “very cold” for this time of year nor would I use the phrase “hit by”.
You forgot “cyclone tsunami”
And “atmospheric river”
That was a 105 ft. wave not long ago at the Mavericks near Half Moon Bay. It’s a small patch that produces those incredible waves.
We had a “bomb cyclone” in Washington state in November.
What happened to global warming and those boiling oceans?
Do these new woke forecasters even know what the jet stream is and it’s affect on weather patterns?
To ride a wave like that to the end without wipeout is incredible. What does a surfer do for an encore?
Guess after (MSM) keeping their pie-hole shut for the last 4 years(inflation, war, poverty, invasion...)...with Trump coming in...everything will NOW become a "disaster".
Freaking clowns.
“Colorado in the 20’s and 30’s on New Years!”
Sounds warm! Last time I stood outside for the KBPI ball drop in Denver years ago it was like 18°.
