Master woodworker was among Carter's many accomplishments

Former President Jimmy Carter was often photographed, hammer in hand, helping to build homes for Habit for Humanity.

But he was also an avid furniture maker. Earlier this year, the White House Historical Association described Carter as a "master woodworker."

In a 1984 interview with United Press International, Carter said he typically spent three or four hours a day in his woodshop.

"I just finished making some picture frames, my first experience of that," he said, adding that he and his wife, Rosalynn Carter, "are measuring an entire room for bookshelves."

Carter commissioned a rocking chair from renowned furniture maker Sam Maloof, describing the master as his "woodworking hero."

In 2004, Carter wrote a short blog post for Fine Woodworking magazine describing his woodworking journey. A photo on the post shows Carter putting finish on a live-edge table.

What “many accomplishments”?

I went to college with his nephew. When he was interviewed, he said Jimmy was a genius which is understandable. I believe there is a such a thing as “too smart to be President”.

Three to four hours a day in the wood shop? Sounds like he was hiding from his wife.

"I just finished making some picture frames, my first experience of that," he said [in 1984]

Wow! Impressive! You really need to be a true Master Woodworker to make a picture frame.

I heard he also always said thank you when others were nice to him.

They are desperately trying to prop up a man who got thousands killed through his weak and fe less behavior, hiding his rabid antisemitism and elitist beliefs. He was a rude arrogant lier.

I was caretaker for a place that had a large amount of Stickley furniture- apparently it was very 3xpensive, and worth a lot, but a fire later proved that even expensive furniture is no match for it’s power.

It was really nice furniture. Though. A huge long dining room table that sat 15-20 or so, and chairs to match were the centerpieces. I’m sure the owner got compensat3d well for them, but still, losing them was a tough hit

The propagandistic NPR is enjoying its celebration of the incompetent, leftist Jimmy Carter. Hopefully NPR’s funding will soon be cut in the near future.

Trying like hell to prop this guy up. Horrible President, but not as bad as Obama and Biden. Clinton sold all our secrets to China literally over the counter (Solid rocket fuels was the beginning through Loral Space). The Bushes were horrible as well for different reasons. It’s just been a bad 50 years for US Presidents.

Even Reagan admits he got rolled on immigration. It led to the destruction of the western US economically and culturally.

Trump got rolled his first term.

There’s a lot of broken to fix. It’ll be interesting.

And Obama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

Don’t like being so negative, but even if Carter put a lot of sweat and toil into building habitats, that alone doesn’t make him a master woodworker. An “Honorary Master Woodworker”? That I could deal with.

I remember when he was working on his first book after the landslide (actually wrote all his own books). Apparently had all or most of the book done and lost it when his computer glitched. He’d written the whole danged thing without ever once saving the file.

You say that like it's a bad thing. My wife sends me out there when she's upset or when she thinks I need decompression...

Decades ago I read that Mr. Carter had made arrangements for prisoners in a Georgia prison to make a very plain wooden casket for his eventual use. If I remember correctly he took custody of it.

It will be interesting to see if it is used as planned.

And Obama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

I was in Oslo a couple of years ago. The Nobel center is right on the harbor there. I had to walk by it a bunch of times during the trip. Every time, I spat on the sidewalk in front of it.
