Class dismissed: Colleges expected to close as enrollment numbers tank

It’s no big secret that the cost of attending a four-year college or university in the United States is out of control. It’s almost gravity defying how the cost of college has increased relative to regular inflation over the past twenty years. In fact, more than 500 nonprofit private colleges have shut down in the last decade according to the Wall Street Journal, which was "three times what it was in the decade prior."

The news is about to get worse, and there is a stern warning announcement coming from the pilot in the cockpit. 2025 is going to have a lot of turbulence followed by potentially weekly plane crashes of colleges and universities who can no longer afford to open their doors. This new reality is the ultimate law of supply and demand and families in America are voting with their feet.

Enrollment

Trend experts have new terminology they call the "enrollment cliff." The number of students enrolled in degree-granting colleges and universities fell by 15% from 2010 to 2021 and only 62% of high school seniors in the U.S. immediately go on to college right now.

That’s a stark contrast to almost fifteen years ago when the number was 68% in 2010, according to government data. Many of the students who opt out of a postsecondary education are low-income students, but even those with means are beginning to choose alternatives. We’ve also seen a spike in the competition for state colleges and universities where parents can enjoy in-state tuition and other possible grant programs offered for only in-state students.

‘Minority Lesbian Women’s Studies’

That sounds so 1990s. Everyone at the University now knows that men can be Lesbians as well. Only the Radical Lesbian Feminists deny that.

I get your point about well-founded, but when I hire an electrician or a plumber, I don’t talk with them while they’re working. I let them do the job at hand. Conversation is either before they start, or after they’ve finished, and followed by payment when the job is completed.

My daughter’s friend is about to graduate from medical school in May - $500,000 in debt. Even with a doctor’s salary (eventually after years of residency) it will be difficult to get out from under that massive loan.

Meanwhile, had a plumber in the house who charged me $240 for a .10 cent part he had in his truck to fix a toilet that had broken on the Thanksgiving Eve. The repair took 10 minutes.

Yes, I am learning to do it myself from YouTube videos, but didn’t know at the time, the other bathroom was undergoing renovations and I had a houseful of relatives arriving the next morning.

College just isn’t for everyone.

Agreed. Too many people are being encouraged to go to college when they do not need it. That said, however, for those who do want a liberal arts education, colleges have become too bloated with worthless side studies.

If *I* had it to do over, I'd have become a warlord in a post-apocalypse world.

Easier to get in on the ground floor. Try Chicago or New York.

Well rounded, not well founded.

My daughter is an adjunct professor at two universities. She described the enrollment falloff as severe.

It was interesting to hear her go off on Obama for taking over the student loan programs, which lead to the student loan debt crisis.

She is finally “getting it.”

I had 2 different crews build my library over more than a year. They worked in the day and I worked creating the wood at night. We talked about everything under the sun while they worked. Usually didn’t slow them down much. We learned from one another and had a wonderful time together. Great memories.

Colleges are deeply invested in woke, tenured professors and administrators. Getting rid of them and making college a valuable experience will be nearly impossible. Perhaps going out of business will be the only way to begin a reform.

“It’s almost gravity defying how the cost of college has increased relative to regular inflation over the past twenty years.”

Want to see college costs go WAY down - end ALL forms of government aid and require private aid to be non-discriminatory.

Isn’t there a large ATC facility right off Rt 3 outside of Nashua? Its good if they are creating a “feeder system” to support that.

I live in a blue collar town. The most beautiful homes are those owned by plumbers. Trades are great professions for young people.

After working in the hospital environment and getting to know several young med school grads...the loan burden AND the cost of malpractice insurance is horrifying.

My cousin is married to a specialist. He probably makes $350k a year. His expenses eat up most of it. He is certainly not “poor.” But, my wife and I made about a third of that and we were much “better off” after expenses than they were.

Has your daughter figured out that the Obama administration’s takeover of student loans was designed to subsidize the schools — to the determiner of the students? And that the enrollment decline she’s seeing would have started 10-12 years earlier without the government takeover of student loans?

It took a while....She has an MFA and was pretty well indoctrinated.

But, when you have to deal with entitled freshmen...you change your stripes pretty fast. It was interesting, she was at a private university last year and the kids who were there were much more serious. The public school kids—not so much.

Its interesting too hear her view from “the front lines.”

I suppose if it’s a larger project, that would be a great thing. Apparently, I haven’t had any major work done on my house in a while. We are considering a bathroom remodel, so that may be changing in the next year.

Otherwise, it’s been pretty quick repair jobs around here. You make a great point for longer term projects.
