As Putin reaches 25 years in power, has he 'taken care of Russia'?
BBC ^ | Dec 29 | Steve Rosenberg -- BBC Russia editor

I will never forget New Year's Eve 1999.

I was working as a producer in the BBC's Moscow bureau. Suddenly there was breaking news: Russia's President Boris Yeltsin had stepped down.

His decision to resign took everyone by surprise, including the British press corps in Moscow. When the news broke there was no correspondent in the office. That meant I had to step in to write and broadcast my first BBC dispatch.

"Boris Yeltsin always said he would see out his full term in office," I wrote. "Today he told Russians he'd changed his mind."

It was the start of my career as a reporter.

And the start of Vladimir Putin's as Russia's leader.

Following Yeltsin's resignation, in accordance with the Russian constitution, Prime Minister Putin became acting president. Three months later he won the election.

On leaving the Kremlin, Yeltsin's parting instruction to Putin was: "Take care of Russia!"

mystery to me as well why the knee jerk reaction to Putin by all things media and defense doesn’t somehow translate to the reality here at home of “our own” destroying the country

The BBC is hung up on how bad certain nations are like Russia and China James Bond is telling them what to publish IMHO.

The BBC is often an instrument of British Intelligence.

Seriously a Russian cargo ship blown up on the high seas in the Mediterranean last Monday and in the Baltic Finland seizing a Russian linked oil tanker.

This may be leading to a blockade of Russia in the Baltic including the Kaliningrad enclave.

I offered some commentary inside my big weekend post...

“ The vast majority of country leaders are corrupt kleptocrats today.”

And Putin takes the cake.

He is the leader of the largest country (by land mass) on the earth. I suspect XI in China can give him a run on who is most corrupt.

As of January 2024, the average Russian senior pension is approximately 20,800 Russian rubles per month, which translates to roughly $233 USD at current exchange rates

Add 21+ interest rates and 10+ inflation

That does sound wonderful

Putin is the Strawman used by the media to distract US from our own government.

I agree about the Chicoms

Xi’s only been in ten years, though.

Why do you worship Putin?

Last week the WSJ finally told a sleepy America that Biden has been functioning at a diminished capacity x 4 years.

That begs the question, who has been in charge?

Did you miss that?

My point was that Americans on this thread who want to move to Russia have a greased path if they are already collecting retirement, they just get on a plane and go, and their income follows them.

I’ll let Russians decide about Russia. Perhaps we would do well to worry about our own country.

It has become a total mess.

Like democrat scatterbrained thought. No reason or rationality.

Perhaps we would do well to worry about our own country. It has become a total mess.

First we need to deal with foreign threats to the BlackRock takeover of Ukraine. Then we can worry about invading gangs of murderers. First things first.

Priorities alwasy seem to go agaist what is important for the citizens of the US> It’s a little bit like Ryan’s WTF moment when he stated that we need to pass the Obama budget before we can move on to some conservative legislation.

MI-6 spitballing instead of worrying about the future of a country with whom our special relationship is effectively dead and buried.
