Pueblo, Colorado - An arrest affidavit for a former employee of the Pueblo Rescue Mission accuses her of stealing more than $15,000 from at least 12 residents.

According to court documents, Lori Arabie, the former shelter director, would regularly collect a portion of residents' earnings, paychecks, Social Security, and disability money. This was reportedly part of a policy when residents had to save 30 percent of their income. According to investigators, this policy was not documented and shelter board members were not aware of any such policy.

Investigators calculated a total of $15,801.08 is missing from 12 people, though they said there could be more victims.

One of Lori’s close coworkers reportedly told police, “...residents that gave Lori their money were the ones who had severe mental health issues, and she didn’t target the people who could advocate for themselves.”

Arabie is charged with Theft, a class 5 felony. She made her first court appearance Friday in Pueblo, after turning herself in Thursday.

A judge granted Arabie a bond. She is set to be back in court on January 6.

It's not only theft, but abuse of elder or debilitated people. To me that is a larger crime than theft itself. I am constantly amazed at those who prey upon the helpless.

“”This was reportedly part of a policy when residents had to save 30 percent of their income.””

Can someone explain what that means?

Sounds like they’re making residents save $$ toward eventual emancipation. I wonder if it’s in conjunction with a low-cost housing program, and intended to get the client budgeting for rent.

Wasn't this a plot line in Better Call Saul?

I heard that PBS was also fleecing the elderly for donations.
