Athena, a 4-year-old German Shepherd and Husky mix, escaped her home in Green Cove Springs, Florida, on Dec. 15, prompting a search among the community and nearby towns for her. Her owner, Brooke Comer, said her family left for church that day and got a message from her neighbor with a picture of Athena outside the house.
Comer panicked. Her family rushed home to find her collar in the crate and no visible opening Athena could have gotten out from. How she escaped remains a mystery.
The entire search was a terrifying and scary experience for Comer, who was worried about where her already skittish dog could have gone or could have encountered. That was until 2:30 a.m. Christmas Eve, when she got a Ring video notification from her doorbell and her other dog began barking.
As soon as Comer opened the door, Athena bolted inside and went to go lick her son's face, who was on the couch half-asleep. After that, she immediately grabbed her ball to play and shortly went to her cage to go back to sleep.

The dog is beautifully cared for. Look at that coat.
That’s an assumption. Maybe the dog believes in Kwanza.
Aww!
She’s just a girl
She’s a bomb
I love these stories of lost pets returning. This one is especially wonderful because of Christmas. Thanks for posting this and giving me a smile. I’ve got a nice case of the warm and fuzzies now. :)
When I was a kid, I had a beloved cat who went missing. Turned out that it was picked up by the pound because it was hanging around with a female stray who had delivered a litter and had been reported. It’s the saddest experience that I recall from my childhood.
My folks called the pound trying to trace the cat, and finally learned that it was adopted by someone who lived miles away. When my folks tracked that person down, she told us that the cat had escaped after a few days, and she hadn’t seen it since.
Weeks later, our cat showed up at our house, skinny and filthy. It had traveled miles to get back to us.
That cat lived to be about 20 years old.
I began to truly believe in miracles the night that cat came back and we heard it crying outside.
There are many stories like this.
Glad you had a Happy Ending. I did, too!
When I first started dating Beau, we decided that a few months in we needed to make sure our dogs got along.
So, I brought Miss Lucy, Yellow Lab, with me to visit for the day to see if she and Beau’s Beagle would hit it off.
All went well until Chief (Beagle) decided they should go hunting - and off they went. Lucy never returned with Chief that evening. :(
Beau got a call a few days later from the Humane Society that Lucy had been found (she had a collar and tags and shot tags) by someone who was keeping her at their house. (Beau had left his number with them just in case.)
My girl stopped at their white, Four-Square Colonial house which looked just like ‘home’ to Miss Lucy, LOL! She barked at the door to be let in!
Man, that’s a horrible feeling when a pet goes missing! So, again, I’m glad we both had Happy Endings! :)
Gorgeous dog!
“She’s just a girl
She’s a bomb”
I see what you did there. Hadn’t heard that song in a while.....until about three hours ago in the car > SIRIUSXM “Classic Vinyl” channel.
My daughter bought a German Shepard in Belgium when she vacationed there. Flew him to her home in San Francisco, named him Pasha, which means leader in Arabic. She lived in SF right across from Golden Gate Park. Pasha was absolutely the leader of all the dogs in the park.
Really fun to watch iim tell all the other dogs what to do.
2:30 a.m. on Christmas Eve?
Obviously Santa was trying to hitch her to his sleigh because Vixen was just too pooped to keep going. But Athena said “No way!” and bolted for the house.
My wife lost her dog “Rocket” when she was a little girl. Her dad told her that Rocket left to go live on a farm. It was many, many years later that she finally learned that Rocket never made it to the farm.
Be funny if the dog rang the doorbell and left a flaming bag of human poop on the porch.
I thought so, too. That shiny coat is amazing.
Thank goodness for that miracle return.
Thank God this sweet pup returned home. My sister has a husky his name is Simba(But we call him Simmie) the second you open the door out he goes, gotta watch him like a hawk
Nope, that title belongs to Sasquatch.....
We lived in Massachusetts and my sister found a cat. She called it Ophelia. A short time later she saw a sign down by the B&M railroad station about a lost cat that fit the description of her adopted cat. The bitch ignored the sign and kept the cat. Some people are just evil.
Huskies have a reputation for getting loose and cruising for 100 or 200 miles. Because they can, and like to.
