Morrison Hotel made famous by The Doors destroyed by fire while occupied by squatters

The Morrison Hotel, the famous backdrop for The Doors’ 1970 album named after it, was destroyed by a huge fire Thursday while being occupied by dozens of homeless squatters.

Almost 100 firefighters worked for at least two hours from 11 a.m. to control the fire at the downtown Los Angeles hotel best known for being on the cover of the legendary rock album.

The blaze destroyed the roof of the building now red-tagged as being unlivable.

Henry Diltz, the photographer who shot the album cover, said he was “very sad” to see the landmark so badly damaged, telling CBS News Los Angeles: “I hope somebody will rebuild it.”

Flophouses always looked run down.

I stayed in a couple of “Guest Houses” in San Francisco in the early 70s. I had a field service engineering job and was out in the field 97% of the time, but I had to come to the regional office sometimes between jobs (normally I’d be assigned to a different job and travel between jobs). The “Guest Houses” were cheap and maybe one rung above such flophouses as the Morrison. But the price was about the same. You got a small room, a bath down the hall, and a communal area with breakfast.

Good album - Peace Frog I might say could be one of The Doors’ best tracks.

Read a long article on this - and there wasn’t a single mention of squatters, only that the building was abandoned.

Kudos to Breitbart for mentioning the squatters in their headline.

Another reason to entirely abandon the msm.

I agree. Just a great LP overall, but Peace Frog has that something special that just doesn't happen often.

Smoked some good ganji to that record way back in the day. When I had an indestructible body ha ha

I was thinking more about arson. 12 million investment to be redeveloped to homeless housing. Owned by AIDS healthcare foundation. Building is 110 years old. Wouldn’t pass earthquake and fire standards without very expensive rebuild.
Probably get insurance money. Enough to pay for demolition, and some new construction costs. Not to have to go through demolition permitting process. Also, not a having to deal with historical, preservation, environmental impact groups. Could rebuild area with much larger building and underground parking. Automatic major profit. Calling Jim Rockford.

I think Morrison Hotel was their best work. Not a lame song on the whole album.

Do some “big chasing” and get free medical care.

This is why I believe there will never be a cure or vaccine for AIDS allowed.

In point of fact, Morrison’s father was Admiral of the Fleet at the Gulf of Tonkin Incident (which precipitated our involvement in the Vietnam War).

Yep, Morrison appointed to Rear Admiral the same year his son’s band released ‘The Doors’ in 1967. In my opinion, a good album. I like Morrison’s Hotel more though.
