I Just got a check in the mail;
It's a very official-looking check just like an IRS refund, but we are NOt DUE any refunds.
Return address on the envelope is:
US Department of the Treasury Bureau of the Fiscal Service Philadelphia, PA
Check is printed: United States Treasury
Bunch of numbers
Kansas City, Mo
Has Statue of Liberty
Amount $1992.80
Made out to me AND my wife.
I have NO Idea what this is for, but I intend to deposit it.
Anybody else getting a mystery check like this?
Oh, I am expecting lots of wisecracks from FReepers, but I would really appreciate any help in tracking this down.
Just remember that if the IRS subsequently changes their mind and thinks they sent the check by mistake they could just seize the money plus interest back from your account without any prior notice.
Do not deposit this check
Take it to your bank and they will be able to give all the
info.
When it comes to the IRS (or Feds in general) that may not be relevant.
It's the only way to be sure.
I suspect your “ha ha ha” is about waiting for over an hour to speak to a live person then the line going dead and having to do it all over again. Possibly three times.
I had a problem with a covid check, called the IRS, and that’s exactly what happened to me. I wound up just walking in on the local IRS agent, who took me right in and explained the situation. It took less than 15 minutes.
I recommend that’s what the author of this thread do, just go to a local IRS agent that is typically located in a federal building where the fed court house is.
Go ahead and deposit it right away, spend the money as quick as you can. Checks don’t just fall into your mailbox everyday.
Look for a phone number on the document. 87,000 well armed agents waiting for your call.
I got 10$ that they are about to own your bank account.....(it’s a scam)...
Check here to VERIFY if it’s a REAL IRS check (from your description it seems not)
https://fiscal.treasury.gov/reference-guidance/gold-book/section-1.html
They were saying they were stimulus checks that were not sent out or cashed.
Go to the bank and ask if it is legitimate.
In very small print it says: "void after one year, Regional Disbursing Officer: Vena (Vona or Vera) S Robinson"
call the IRS and they’ll tell you what it was for.

Seriously? 😂🤣😂
Common sense..... so rare that it qualifies as a superpower.
