I am not starting a debate about the pros and cons of confession. If you want a debate, go start a thread on the Religion Forum.
But a quick internet search confirms that opening or walking through these doors does nothing with regard washing away the stain of mortal sin. Nor is the Church making such a claim.
Removing mortal sin can be achieved only through a valid confession, holy unction, and/or perfect contrition.

The title of the article is either written by someone totally stupid or ignorant. In Latin Porta can mean depending on context either door or gate, it is the same way in Italian, porta means door or gate. The Holy Door of Saint Peters which is only opened for Jubilee years was opened last night for the first time since 2000 when Pope John Paul II opened it.
The message of this years, like all jubilees is for Catholics to first embrace the forgiveness (go to the Sacrament of Confession] and then seek reconciliation with each other (family members, friends, or parishioners that maybe we have had a fallen out with].

When will people realize that Catholicism is a total made up religion. First off, name me one author of the New testament that knew Jesus, was there at the Crucifixion or anybody else that was there for the resurrection. Did any of his disciples write anything down and as a matter of fact Jesus never wrote anything down, the church was nothing more than an avenue to control people. It also spread to the protestants. MLK hated the jews after he could not recruit them, his writings tell that story. So sick and tired of Christian religion brainwashing people because that is the same tactic Islam uses.
