With employees from various walks of life, the holidays can present both opportunities and challenges for fostering inclusion in the workplace. Ensuring that everyone feels respected and valued requires thoughtful planning and action.

Outside of the more commonly known holidays such as Christmas, New Year’s, and Labor Day, dozens of celebrations take place every year that most likely affect a few people in your team.

But it’s not enough to simply be aware of these differences. As the holiday season approaches, nothing highlights a sense of community more than embracing and appreciating the diverse beliefs in the workplace. DEI?

Why should I be forced to accept something right or wrong, because someone I don’t know or does not have the same values as I do demands it? One of the wonderful things about the US is the push to live your life as you wish without being compelled to live it someone else’s way if you don’t harm someone? If I go to someone’s home, I will do what they do or I won’t go if I don’t like what they do. So I have no right or privilege to expect a certain behavior different from their norms just to placade me. And that’s what freedom is all about.

“What the hell is a ‘Diwali”?”

I was wondering too. Maybe we can find the author - “Sho Dewan” - and ask!

But I looked it up. Wiki: “is the Hindu festival of lights, with variations celebrated in other Indian religions such as Jainism and Sikhism. It symbolises the spiritual victory of Dharma over Adharma, light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance. Diwali is celebrated...around mid-September and mid-November.”

IOW, no one really gives a rat’s rear end about it.

How about someone going into the HR department of a corporation, finding the DEI person, and going Luigi on them?

Where did you get those?

My family would love them, especially my older brother.

Feelings are emotions.
You are in control of your emotions; no one can MAKE you feel anything.
You feel what you choose to feel.

That said, here’s a life-hack to remember:
To FEEL respected and valued, choose to BE respectful and valuable.

“Malclom Forbes was a homosexual biker. The magazine is now owned by a company in Red China.”

I’m curious: What conclusion do you think we should draw from your statements?

“instead of just using traditional Christmas decorations, you might also include symbols of other cultural holidays, such as menorahs for Hanukkah, Kwanzaa-themed ornaments”

Or, you could keep HR out of it and let employees decorate their cubicles any d@mn way they please!
Now THAT would actually be “inclusive”!
