A New York man was arrested this month after allegedly causing a car crash last year that killed his niece and three nephews when he slowed down to take photos of the “Welcome to Florida” sign at the state border.
Marvin Redondo-Funes, 25, is facing four counts of aggravated manslaughter of a child and driving with a license suspended or revoked causing great bodily injury, the Florida Highway Patrol said in an X post on Wednesday.

Nassau County Jai Redondo-Funes drove his girlfriend and the four children from New York to Florida, finally crossing the Georgia-Florida border around 4 a.m. July 1, 2023, according to the criminal complaint.
As they entered the state, Redondo-Funes allegedly slowed the car to just 1 or 2 miles per hour to take a clear photo of the “Welcome to Florida” sign. A car coming up behind him didn’t see his vehicle slowing down and plowed into the back of Redondo-Funes’ car at full speed — right where the four kids were sitting, according to FHP officials.

We just drove cross country and took photos of most of the state signs.
Several states have large pull offs so people can safely take their photos.
Others don’t. We missed a couple. Others we slowed to about 50 mph.
agree. the car that hit the slowed car may very well be more at fault unless the “slowed the car to 1-2 miles per hour” was done very abruptly leaving absolutely no time for car behind to stop.
Meaning if the guy slowed down slowly, then I see it as the driver in second cars fault. His head lights would have shown car in front.
Heck, I was PARKED for over AN HOUR for a Semi-BBQ in Ohio, once. There were literally hundreds like me, over many miles of interstate. We got out and walked around and talked with others who had also turned off their cars and were playing ON THE INTERSTATE, between the vehicles.
I guess someone could have turned us in, as our cars were fully functional and turned off, so I guess I'm fortunate police didn't review those Facebook updates.
In my experience, failure to yield to avoid an accident is the ticket issues—and I did have one of those, years ago. You even get those when driving on ice and you can't stop.

But, IMHO, Florida LEO would have validated the children’s relationship to the driver’s alleged sister in the normal course of investigation. In the absence of citation, I see no evidence of trafficking absent finding something in filing docs or arrest reports which conflicts with the familial narrative...even though it is impossible to confirm that the two are brother & sister.

If you rear end someone you are always at fault.
Even slowing abruptly is not an adequate excuse. I am open to discussion on this, but only from someone who has never, ever, at any point in his life, slammed on his brakes in response to some sudden road hazard. This was an interstate highway at 3 a.m., so we can probably discount a small child darting out into the road. But we can all imagine 1001 other scenarios.
The gray area scenario (at least to me) is when one is in heavy traffic — in which case cars are probably not moving at high speeds, though there are some idiot infested places where that can’t be counted on — and pulling back to a safe following distance simply invites cheaters to constantly cut in (usually abruptly) as they try to weave their way forward. I will confess to riding bumpers a lot closer than I’d like once I reach my limit for tolerating the cheaters. But even then ....
It’s on me to allow sufficient time and distance to stop. Period.

Has anybody notice the number of hit-and-run accidents? We get at least one, sometimes three with every traffic report.
It’s the illegals. They have no registration, no insurance, no license and multiple traffic violations. Of course they run.
Every driver is required to be watching the road in front of them at all times.
The ticket you receive is “Failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.”
Ask me how I know.

At first glance, I had the same thought: Wasn’t the other driver paying attention? Isn’t the driver who rear-ends a car always at fault?
But, then, the article mentioned the uncle was also charged with “driving with a license suspended or revoked causing great bodily injury.”
So, the charges seem to stem from a combination of his driving without a license and his slowing down almost to a stop on the highway just to take a photo of a sign.
It’s heartbreaking about the kids. Just unimaginable.
Yes, it is my understanding from an incident many years ago in another state that if someone without a legal license is in an accident, it is that person’s fault no matter the circumstances, as he was not supposed to be there at all.
