A New York man was arrested this month after allegedly causing a car crash last year that killed his niece and three nephews when he slowed down to take photos of the “Welcome to Florida” sign at the state border.
Marvin Redondo-Funes, 25, is facing four counts of aggravated manslaughter of a child and driving with a license suspended or revoked causing great bodily injury, the Florida Highway Patrol said in an X post on Wednesday.

Marvin Fedondo-Funes’ mugshot following his arrest for allegedly causing a car crash that killed his niece and three nephews. Nassau County Jai Redondo-Funes drove his girlfriend and the four children from New York to Florida, finally crossing the Georgia-Florida border around 4 a.m. July 1, 2023, according to the criminal complaint.
As they entered the state, Redondo-Funes allegedly slowed the car to just 1 or 2 miles per hour to take a clear photo of the “Welcome to Florida” sign. A car coming up behind him didn’t see his vehicle slowing down and plowed into the back of Redondo-Funes’ car at full speed — right where the four kids were sitting, according to FHP officials.

Is he a citizen?
Or not...
Here’s your sign
Too much blame directed at the sign
Why did it take more than a year to make an arrest?
Lab work, my backside.
was he a tik tok influencer?
Is LE sure those kids were actually related to the perp...
More details here...
Boy, I’m really wondering if those kids were actually related to the perp.
Yes, but you’re still not supposed to rear end people. Vehicles can be stopped on the interstate for many reasons. It’s not always possible to get to the shoulder. Was the driver of the car who rammed into the rear of the stopped car charged with anything, or was he related to a politician? Or a cop?
At 3 a.m., one should be able to switch lanes and drive by. Was the driver asleep, drunk, or driving too fast for the road conditions (e.g. fog)? Or was he riding this guy’s bumper on an empty road?
Where’s his need for instant gratification now?
I have seen drivers such as that: not stopping to photograph a sign, but stopping on an expressway and waiting for traffic to pass because they realized that were in the wrong lane to make their exit. I came close to slobbering one.
A drivers license test should also have some kind of test that checks for idiocy or other mental impairment. That would probably eliminate a good third of the drivers.
Any minimum MPH on a highway should be ignored. Anything can cause slow traffic—look at rush hours in cities.
‘Clobbering” not “slobbering “. Stupid autocorrect!
Is that a new form of sarcasm? I sure hope so.
I find it strange that the parents were not with the kids.
I am guessing Marvin's brake lights weren't functioning and I would be curious what the status of his lights were overall. What were the weather conditions? This would be relevant as well.
Isn’t it illegal to stop on the hwy?
Stopping on the highway to take a picture is in line with the mentality of someone used to riding a donkey.
I guess he became a Florida man as he got close to the border.
