LEAVENWORTH, Kansas, Friday, Dec. 9, 1864.

The silence of your correspondent from this region is owing to the fact of his absence with the Army of the Border in the late pursuit of Gen. PRICE to the Arkansas, where active duties in the field and the fatigue consequent thereon precluded the possibility of his writing. Seventy continuous days in the saddle on the Indian expedition and the later campaign, with participation in all but two of the engagements of that pursuit, may be offered as an excuse, and as a reasonable limit to my powers of physical endurance. So much Of way of personal instruction and apology.

THE UPRISING IN KANSAS.

The most profound quiet prevails in Kansas at this time. This is but a natural result of the important events which within the past two months have added new lustre to the renowned loyalty and courage of this Date. Nothing like this marvelous uprising has been witnessed since the war. When the Governor's call was issued and Gen. CURTIS proclaimed martial law, upon the certainty that the rebel army was advancing to invade us, the entire male population sprang to arms to resist the invasion. Traversing as I did the entire width of the State, returning from the Indian expedition, I can truly say that the response was indeed stirring. It revealed the important fact of the great growth in population Kansas has had since the war. We have sent 12,000 white males to swell the Union army since the President's first call. Yet the call for our militia brought not less than 20,000 armed men to their feet. Of these, about 4,000 were exempts. At least 17,000 were massed at different points along the border, waiting the approach of the foe. Leavenworth was fortified;
