Japanese automakers Honda and Nissan have announced plans to join forces, forming the world’s third-largest automaker by sales as the industry undergoes dramatic changes in its transition away from fossil fuels.

The two companies said they had signed a memorandum of understanding on Monday and that smaller Nissan alliance member Mitsubishi Motors also had agreed to join the talks on integrating their businesses.

“We anticipate that if this integration comes to fruition, we will be able to deliver even greater value to a wider customer base,” Nissan’s CEO Makoto Uchida said in a statement.

I hope they put real transmissions in their cars. I lost 2 at around 90,000

Yep! That’s what I saw, and how I saw them being used.

This merger seems pretty good because Honda doesn’t make body on frame trucks needed for heavy duty. Nissan also makes a delivery van which seems popular.

Nissan has fallen behind in the car market and could let Honda do the cars instead.

Good point. Honda’s Ridgeline is a pretty cool truck-like vehicle but has a unibody. A true Honda truck with a frame would really be something.

Of course they do. They literally can thousands of workers toward a problem!

Also there is no union, no profit motive, the Chinese export model is to destroy the evil capitalists.

The Chinese allowed the USA and European car companies to invest in Chinese car production. But only with a 50% Chinese partner. The Chinese also do not respect Intelligent Property. So, the USA and European car companies trained the Chinese how to design and build cars. Now the Chinese are building their own cars thanks to the jump start while Western Car manufacturing in Chinese has hit the skids.

Great so Honda already declining reliability will go further into the toilet.

Nissan sadly has the worst Cvt transmissions on the planet and has them in nearly all their vehicles other than their trucks and armada and Honda sadly has had the same issues since switching over to CVT transmissions.

I would love to think that Honda buying out Nissan would improve Nissan, but I suspect it will likely further degrade Honda.

The mania for replacing simple, reliable ,rugged systems with new more complex highly tuned but inherently more fragile systems is ultimately wasteful.

Nissan’s 4 cyl gas engine in the 80s was so well built that my then co-workers using the truck daily while practically empty of oil did not ruin it. My work partner added 3 quarts to get it to show on the dipstick when we took it over.

CAFE and emissions standards have a lot to do with this, I believe, but also our obsession with horsepower.

The 2015 Explorer Sport I just bought has 365 (!!) horsepower. I’ve laid on it a couple of times. It’s literally more power than I can control. My 1997 Explorer has less than half that. Crazy.

True that engines run cleaner now than most of the older ones. There were some who could adjust caurberators to run efficiently and get excellent gas mileage but most ended set less than optimum. It was literally an art.

The mine is bigger than yours pervades many fields. Some will say it is that which causes us to achieve more.

What happens to Infiniti and Acura? Infiniti is going to be eliminated and they are by far the better ICE on every level.

"This could be bad for Honda. Unless they intend on using the original Japanese quality Nissan plants and not the crap Nissan that merged with both low quality FIAT AND RENAULT."

Yep, they'll prop up Nissan as an entry-level micro-sedan like the Versa, hybrid or electronic only. Throwing garbage at the CCP garbage infesting the BRICs.

CVT’s are about MPG, but they just aren’t, in their current form, as long term reliable… and the Nissan’s are among the worst. CVT’s in current form
Are purely friction driven systems. They aren’t designed to drive SUV’s and larger vehicles. Unfortunately Nissan also just has bad transmissions on top of it.
