These 38 Republicans voted against the Trump-backed spending bill

Thirty-eight House Republican lawmakers voted against the President-elect Trump-backed government spending bill that failed to clear the lower chamber with just more than a day before the shutdown.

These GOP representatives voted Thursday against the measure that would have prevented a government shutdown and suspended the debt limit:

The bill, which Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) presented just a few hours before it was voted on, failed with a 174-235-1 vote. It did not reach the two-thirds margin necessary to pass as it was brought under the suspension of the rules.

The danger is that the next version will be worse, The Democrats will back it, get a few votes from Republicans who don’t want a shutdown, and what ends up passing will be worse than what just got voted down.

They didn’t like the debt ceiling extension. They don’t trust themselves (congress and senate) to cut spending. Which is stupid and tells you what Trump is fighting against.

A debt ceiling extension is meaningless if spending is cut.

I think the current regime has dirt on many republicans.
Democrats probably have several unnamed “Dirt Czars” who’s sole job is to dig up republican skeletons. MAGA needs a head Dirt Czar with a bulldozer.

The issue is time. They could probably cut a lot of things given the time to work them all out, but that’s the job that DOGE is supposed to do. It’s a chicken-and-egg problem, and we can’t leave the government shut down for the months that DOGE will require to do their work.

They’re going to have to work out a short-term budget with a reasonable amount of small cuts (whatever they can come up with quickly) and revisit the issue once DOGE comes back with their results. That was always the plan. Anyone who expects a balanced budget right now is dreaming.

Do these 38 even matter? Even WITH their votes, it fails, as it would not reach the 2/3 requirement.

I am all for a shutdown of the government. Democrats can do no further damage to this nation in the remaining month, before Trump takes office.

I support President Trump.
Period.

Never thought I would ever see Mullen smart enough to understand what this group of congresscritters doesn’t. If house dims don’t approve and make schoomer own it then schoomer also owns the debt ceiling.

Chip Roy is like a child. Who actually "campaigned on balancing the budget" and believed their own words? It's a pipe dream. None of his or Massie's economics theory is relevant to this nation right now, with a hanging-by-the-fingernails majority, and every Democrat Marxist in line against Trump.

This vote doesn't matter that much because they needed 290 (I am assuming w/o Gaetz the quorum is 434). But the silly whining about debt ceilings and deficits and budgets is just toddler-level politics, when our entire Republic is at stake. The GOP MUST find a way to get this done, and pass the MAGA agenda next year, or we are done.

No, it doesn’t, if the Dems decide to be obstinate. Plan B would be to work out an internal GOP deal to get everyone on board and push it out through the rules committee. Then they could bring it to the floor normally and pass it with a simple majority. But that requires everyone on the GOP side to swallow some of their pride and make a short-term compromise.

The plan was ALWAYS to have DOGE drive the final budget cuts. This is only to get us to the point that we can get started. Anyone thinking otherwise hasn’t been paying attention.

"Balance the Budget!!!" toddlers like Massie and Roy make that near impossible.

“..which was why so many Republicans defied Trump.”

It was more important at this time to strengthen Trump’s hand and show Republican unity than to put themselves on stage proclaiming righteous motivations.

They should all be primaried.

If the debt ceiling extension is meaningless when spending is cut, then why even put it in the bill??

Looking at the list and their public statements my guess is they wanted less spending.
