SEATTLE — The world’s largest hornet, an invasive breed dubbed the “murder hornet” for its dangerous sting and ability to slaughter a honey bee hive in a matter of hours, has been declared eradicated in the U.S., five years after being spotted for the first time in Washington state near the Canadian border.

The Washington and U.S. Departments of Agriculture announced the eradication Wednesday, saying there had been no detections of the northern giant hornet in Washington since 2021.

My understanding is that one method they used to kill these guys off entailed tying a small ribbon/tracker to the hornets they found while they were eating and then following the ribbons back to the nests to kill the queens.

Apparently, it was extremely effective.

If they kill the queen, I guess the drones disappear. There may be a lesson here ...

I'd bet fipronil laced chicken would have worked just as well for a few percent of the cost.

Pretty amazing feat - France and England have the pests - I wonder if they will try the same method to remove them

I hope never to see, hear or feel the sting of one.
But I’ll bet there are plenty of people who collect exotic life forms and would be happy to pay a very high price to have a few “Murders” snuggled to them here in the states.
There is a certain type of pet owner who loves collecting and displaying very dangerous animals. I’m talking Pit Bulls, Scorpions, Tarantulas and Cobras, to name just a few.

I think Texas said the same thing years ago when someone brought the armadillo home into Texas. They probably also said something like

"I think we've finally eradicated the armadillo in Texas"...

Let's see how it works here..

What ever happened to killer bees? How much of the US is affected by them? We don’t have any recent updates from John Belushi.
