For many years, I've been describing what my first act would be should I ever be elected President of the United States. Granted that's unlikely in the extreme; as someone once said, "If nominated, I will not run, if elected, I will not serve." I don't want the job, but were I somehow thrust into it, my first act would be this:
Visit every office, every agency, every anteroom that contained employees that report to the Executive Branch. I would ask every employee therein, from directors to janitors, two questions:
"What is your purpose here?"
"What are you doing right now?"
Anyone who could not answer those questions to my satisfaction would be dismissed on the spot.
Now, cometh the DOGE. Granted they can only recommend; Elon and Vivek can't go in and start firing people. But at least one Democrat congressman, Seth Moulton of Massachusetts, thinks that some federal employees may be heading for the exits already, perhaps anticipating their dismissal.

Interview continues: “Wait a minute. There is nothing on your employment documents that say you are involved in a top secret project.”

That is true and that is their attitude. The sense of entitlement just drips off of them.
Most feds will NOT voluntarily quit. They cherish their comfortable jobs and generous benefits. They will, as you said, try to just wait it out while engaging in a continuing form of passive resistance.
The article noted that “Elon and Vivek can’t go in and start firing people” but when regulations are eliminated and wasteful programs are ended we can’t keep paying these people to do nothing so a reduction in force (i.e., we don’t need you anymore) should be able to terminate lots of them.
Much to their surprise, a lot of DC bureaucrats are going to get let go because of there’s simply too much unjustifiable waste, redundancy, inefficiency and mismanagement. The feds who work out in the field (i.e., outside of the Swamp) generally do more productive work so most of them will probably keep their jobs.

There are a lot of myths about what can be done to both federal managers and federal employees.
The incoming administration has amazing latitude to do what needs to be done.
Any federal employee or manager can be detailed to Antarctica for six months—immediately.
That is just one tool in the toolkit.
I know people who said they would quit their FedGov job if Trump won. Let’s see what happens.
Implement mandatory 40 hour per week IN THE OFFICE rule and DOGE would be off to a good start.

You are correct. Watch the caterwauling from the feds and their allies in the Democrat Party and the media (but I repeat myself) when the firings begin. Its going to be epic. (Quite frankly, despite our horrendous debt/deficit problem I never thought I’d see this happen.)
I think Elon and Vivek are going to highlight so much waste that people will actually demand smaller government when they see they scope and extent of the mismanagement. Right now they just have a vague notion of widespread bureaucratic inefficiency but when huge savings are actually quantified they are going to be clear eyed about what needs to be done.
Another aspect of DOGE that may not be fully recognized yet is that cutting spending will result in a diminishment of the liberals’ institutional power base and their ability to weaponize the government. In other words, taking their weapons away from them. Every Republican should want to do this.

The dirty little secret in DC is that there are armies of contractors doing work that feds should be doing. Many feds lack the skills and motivation to do the work so rely on contractor support to do it for them. Once they contractors come on board the feds get accustomed to shoveling off work on them.
So you’re right, lots of them don’t have nor do they bother to acquire the skills that would make them marketable on the outside.
Finding stuff/people is a big problem. I read an article about Musk saying that the govt’s computer systems are so bad that they literally don’t know where the money is going, and that is why they perpetually fail audits. He wants to be called a volunteer IT consultant, because he needs to fix the computing if we’re ever going to have actual accountability for govt bloat and wastefulness.
I’d say the same thing is true for state election systems. My son is a computer nerd and believes that election systems could be secure and trustworthy if they were required to use freeware (no proprietary privacy involved) and to publicly post the software used and then just hire people to input the data specific to each year’s election. He says it could be set up also, so that the simple counting function would be set to give results simultaneously so that there’s no time to figure out how many ballots are needed to cheat. The systems could also be made very secure.
Having honest, smart people to create these kinds of systems could solve a LOT of problems within govt. But the bottom feeders would always fight, fight, fight against honest systems.
To do that, Elon Musk is going to have to hire contractors. Then they will have to install Punch In And Out Machine at every federal building in Washington, D.C.
If all the federal employees fail to show up at their office, fire them.
We can probably get rid of 80% of the workforce. Similar to Twitter.
Housing prices will drop, food prices will drop, gas prices will drop, job openings will be abundant, crime will be down, taxes can be reduced, federal budgets will be down...
Eventhough FedGov will do full reimbursement for academics, send you to training at the drop of a hat there now little reward career-wise for showing such initiative. You can’t go to training or school to get the DEI/AA rating so why do it.
Where there is no accountability corruption is certain. The “intelligence” community has to be the most corrupt part of our whole govt. And obviously, FISA judges are in on the corruption, even from what we can see already. I really, really hope DOGE can help us figure out a way so that even agencies which have a need for secrecy can still be held ACCOUNTABLE, because if there is no way to hold them accountable it is guaranteed that they will be corrupt.
And it can’t just be congressional oversight, because that is probably the 2nd-most corrupt part of DC. Somehow IG’s need to be accountable as well - and separate from the agencies they are supposed to hold accountable. What should be very, very apparent to all is that our systems of accountability - from elections themselves right down to audits to IG’s, and on - have utterly failed. It is all compromised and needs to be rebuilt from scratch.
