SHERMAN’S MARCH: HIS APPROACH TO SAVANNAH; He Was Only 25 Miles from that City on Dec. 7 (12/13/1864)

Special Dispatch to the New-York Times.

WASHINGTON, Sunday, Dec. 12.

There is nothing new from Gen. SHERMAN, excepting the reports received via City Point, in Richmond papers of the 10th, to the effect that on the 7th he was within 20 miles of Savannah. It is believed here that SHERMAN has already made a demonstration on that city, and the news is hourly expected.

NEWS FROM REBEL SOURCES.

WASHINGTON, Monday, Dec. 12,

A dispatch from City Point, dated Dec. 11, says:

The latest news contained in the Richmond papers of yesterday, (10th Dec.,) states that on the 7th Gen. SHERMAN was east of the Ogechee River, twenty-five miles from Savannah, moving on that city.

Gen. SHERMAN had marched his army on the 6th eighteen miles.

THE EFFECT OF SHERMAN'S MARCH.

WARREN AND GLASSCOCK COUNTIES.

Correspondence of the Augusta Constitutionalist.

WARRENTON, Thursday, Dec. 1, 1864.

An account of recent observations upon the enemy in this portion of the State may not be uninteresting to your readers, so I venture a brief summary of events, the most of which came under my own notice.

On Friday, Nov. 25, a portion of SHERMAN's cavalry force crossed the Ogeechee River at the shoals, and subdivided into marauding parties, going through public and settlement roads, to every farm in the Southern portion of Warren. The mills at the shoals were burned by a small party who could have been captured, had a small cavalry force of our own stood long enough to have ascertained their strength; but they stampeded, and have not been heard of since -- at least in this section. JEWELL's factory, though visited, was saved; he suffered no loss. The valuable mills of SIMPSON & STEVENS, higher up, were not honored with a visit.

Today, the NYTs would be highlighting the lady who stopped Sherman in his tracks before he hit Savannah, a far more interesting story.
